 Dutch's High idle thread
#11
Dutch, you can disconnect the TPS and ride the bike like that. You won't be able to rev over 5,000 and the check engine light will be on, but otherwise the bike should run fine. I tried it and it and the bike will idle at 1050 and run as it should. It is the "limp home" mode, but at least it is not the runaway fast idle.

Thanks Nacho. Since the rpm drops down to 1krpm when releasing the clutch right before forward engagement I haven't felt as though its trying to run away from me or that it is unsafe to operate (yet?). I am sure that my fuel economy is taking a hit, but its more just an annoyance, every stop light its running at 1500rpm and I feel it should be at its normal 1050rpm or so. Just to verify though. The TPS would be the black module on the left side of the throttle bodies (exposed to view) and one could unplug it there and be fine?

I'm also assuming that I'm not going to potentially damage anything by continuing to ride the bike in its current condition. I have not seen any evidence of overheating and I'm sure the engine doesn't mind idling at those speeds.

Dutch, yes, it is on the left side. Easy to unclip it and reconnect it. Max Smart has a nice video on running his bike with it unclipped. You do not need to raise the tank and remove the plastic cover as he does in this video, but the video does show it nicely. Skip ahead to 1:32 on the video.

Nachodaddy has some good idea's and i think they will pan out for DR.

Dubs the ecu worked fine in the beginning, we have a feeling something "does not add up correctly" and builds up too many " one's" over time and affects the iacv at some point, resetting seems to have had a good effect on Nacho's bike, maybe the newer ecu's have corrected that and is by far the easiest thing to do, just a guess.

I'll just follow this quietly, well done guys.

That does look pretty easy and doable. Thanks for the good video.
Do you think it would be better for the bike to have it in that limp mode vs. having the higher idle running all the time? My daily commute can be done under 5krpm so long as I don't try and pass anyone in a hurry.

Sorry if that's a dumb question. I really enjoy the bike and don't want to risk its longevity if I can avoid it.

Sorry if that's a dumb question. I really enjoy the bike and don't want to risk its longevity if I can avoid it. The only "dumb" question is the one not asked. I don't know for sure if it will cause any harm, but I don't think it will hurt anything. Max is the expert.
Max, what do you think? Could he ride with the TPS disconnected for a while?

This is also assuming that I'm stuck with only the two options of the high idle condition, or the TPS being disconnected.

I'm hoping that I have good results with the ECU reset and that can be used to stave off the problem until we confirm a new ECU to be a long term fix, and I can get one in hand. Back orders and long wait times are such a problem lately.

Now I'm even more confused by this. The ride home yesterday (85° F) the bike was perfect. No high idle, really smooth and such a pleasant ride. I ended up not doing the ECU reset. And this morning's ride in (53°-55°) also no problems. The idle was perfect once I left our neighborhood, and it stayed that way. When I was having trouble the temps must have been under 50° because my fingers were pretty cold by the time I got to work, anything over that and my thin gloves do a decent job and keeping me warm enough.

Even if this is just normal cold weather operation. Or that magical self healing Honda power kicking in. I'll end up snagging one of those new ECUs and keeping it on a shelf. Mainly, for peace of mind in case mine gives problems in the future and they become hard to find.
