Jeez Jgar you are making this way too hard.

The wires in the connector are green, brown, orange with white stripe and black with white stripe.

In this picture, https://ibb.co/MGtwDvt , the top wires are green and brown.

shorting the pins means connecting them together. Use a wire, or a paper clip, or whatever you have.

If that is too hard I can give you the part number for the SCS connector and you can order one and just plug it in.

Thx for the help guys.

Code magically disappeared on start up. Drove it around the block a few times never kicked on.

Wonder if it was some bad gas, or maybe the weather? Ambient temperature has been in the 100-110 degrees recently. Oil lever is fine and amber. Hmm. Wonder what it was

Was trying to confirm that wire was orange and not a faded brown, or vice versa. But thx

Jgar,

Glad to see the fault cleared!!

However, you can still read out any codes that are stored. The book calls that “freeze DTC”. The MIL doesn’t flash with stored codes.

To read them the book says to turn off the ignition switch and short the pins in the DLC connector. Turn on the ignition and stop switch (kill switch) to run and note the MIL blinks.

If you do the test you may be able to find out what tripped the fault.

There is also a procedure for clearing stored faults.

Could that Honda connector be a resistor of a certain ohms?

CB, no. It is just a shorting plug. And, I just now dug it out and metered it. Dead short, zero ohms.

Looking at a wiring diagram, the brown wire goes directly to the ECU. The pin it goes to is labeled SCS.

So, put a ground on that input and the ECU will do the flash codes if the setup is followed. Just a logic level. I imagine there is a pull-up resistor in the ECU that holds the line high when not grounded. That kind of thing is common in digital circuits. I’ll have to look at that someday when I have the side cover off.

Thanks all for posting this thread, just a clarification why i used a 1500 ohm resistor, 3 reasons;

1 it is safe to use and will not damage anything if the wrong pins are connected together.
2 it fits very well in the contacts of the connector without spreading them open.
3 It's shape makes it easy to remove and insert into the connector within the time limit of the operation.

And i had a good supply of these resistors, the same effect has always delivered by the using a wire link, some use a switch in a purpose made connector so there can not be a mistake made with the different wires and make removing the link in the process simple, just a matter of choice, it all works if done correctly.

As usual Popgun is correct, the ecu has a "pullup" resistor on one of the cpu pins which if pulled low under certain conditions ( this procedure ) triggers the cel indicator to read out the stored code ( s ).

As i understand it if the cel indicator is on solid it indicates a current fault condition, if it blinks continuously it means a major fault is present and if there is no indication the faults have cleared but are stored in ecu memory for diagnostic purposes so they can be read by the service tech and give him some direction if he is servicing the bike.
