Distance to Empty?

Okay, yes, I first did a search and found several threads from lonnnnnnnng ago discussing mpg, but not what I'm looking for specifically.

I had to have my fuel pump replaced this spring (long story) and the mechanic couldn't get the fuel gauge working properly. (He's going to give it another go this winter for me.) So I'm using that wonderful old-school method of resetting the trip meter every fill up. I also check my mpg and it's always right about 50 mpg exactly.

But not really knowing when that tiny little tank will run dry, I am filling up about every 125 miles or so.

So, all this to ask: Have you ever ran your tank to empty, or almost? How many miles did it take? I'd like to go longer than 125 mile fillups but still be sure I'm not going to sputter to the side of the road.

I don't know how much it helps, but I run just over 150 miles pretty regularly with no issues. Usually, I'm in countdown mode with the gauge flashing, but always with quite a few miles left on the countdown.

I've had to add 3.0 gallons once. I think I was at 163 miles (not sure, but it sticks in my head).

I think what I would do is record how much gas I'm adding at 125 miles and then do a little math to get an estimate. I forget what the actual tank capacity is, but let's say it's 3.0 gallons and at 125 miles, it takes 2.0 gallons to fill it. That's about 63 mpg so you could go another 63 miles before you run dry. But then, if you're running at 80mph, that 3rd gallon is only going to get you maybe 40 more miles. Or if it's windy. Or if you're a big person. Or if you ride uphill both ways to work like my dad did. Point is, that your mileage may differ so the only way to know how far you can go is to make an estimate on your own bike.

I'm thinking the tank capacity is 3.2 gallons. When I've filled up at 125 miles, averaging very close to 50 mpg, then that's about 2.5 gallons, but yeah.... I'll log miles PLUS gallons put in for awhile to see how far I can actually ride on roughly 3 gallons.
Whoops, just did a google search and it says 3.9 gallon capacity.

I’ve run mine to the point that the miles to empty becomes — many times. 3.41 is the most I have ever put in my 14 standard.

(+1) This sounds right to me (2014 standard CB1100 model).

I typically would have about two liters left in the tank maybe good for another 25 to 35 kilometers until bone dry.

Appreciate the replies, folks. Yep, I figure I'm in good shape for at least 150 miles.

Gotta admit, as much as I love my CB1100 (It's a 2013, btw), and I DO love it - will probably keep it til the day I die - I'm spoiled by my GSX650F which gets around 60-65 mpg AND has a frickin' FIVE gallon tank. I wouldn't even start thinking of refueling til I hit 200+ miles on it and I could probably easily go 250+ without worries. Kind of nice out here in Colorado where it's not unusual to have 100 miles or more between gas stations.

My worst ever mileage on a tank of gas was 42 mpg (I think it was a lot of up hill and heavy throttle). At that rate 160 miles is the limit. I try to always try to look for gas around 140 or peek in to the tank to see what's left.

This doesn't really answer your question, but the fuel float / pump assembly is a pretty simple affair. Did the mechanic say what he thinks the problem is?
