MCN has now tested the 2014 Std (Jan '16) and 2014 DLX (Jul '14). The Std has a reported GVWR of 891 lbs, and the DLX, which is about 30 lbs heavier, has a reported GVWR of 922 lbs. Fair enough.
What I find curious is that both bikes have the same reported carrying capacity, about 350 lbs. All things considered equal, I'd expect the Std to have a 30 lb. advantage over the DLX, since they're essentially the same bike and ride on the same tires. Thoughts?

I have found the weight limiting factor is the suspension
(springs). It is not the power, brakes, tires, frame.
The suspension, front and rear, are set up for a specific weight range, The small difference could be made up in a change in preload spacer length.

Both bikes have the same suspension, but the limiting factor to GVWR and carrying capacity is typically the axles and tires, not suspension, so I'm at a loss.

Marketing, that is all. The standard would be safe with an extra 30 lb added to reach 922 from the engineering standpoint considering all load carrying parts are identical between the standard and deluxe.

Lots of things were changed on the DLX (axles for one) due to the extra weight of the DLX. The DLX also has different fork springs (I believe), and differing amounts of oil per leg (I know). It was spelled out in those engineers talk pieces.
all Hondas have ridiculously low load capacities for both bikes and accessories.

Honda owners needn't be concerned with GVWR and carrying capacity. Honda only publishes these numbers to keep regulators happy. Here's proof:
