My first thought was that Gerald's loved ones placed the memorial there obviously to remember him, but also as a reminder for those travelling this route to remain vigilant while driving, or riding...a good reminder message.  But the internet being what it is, I was able to find his his gravesite at Zillah, WA.  He apparently was a police officer and did not die from an accident.  Perhaps the memorial point was just a beautiful spot that he and his wife loved and she placed the memorial there because the spot had special meaning.  Maybe he proposed to her at that overlook.

My wife's brother was on that Marshall team, but missed the flight due to injury. He always felt guilty about it, and ended up drinking himself to death when he was 36.

Wow.  I can barely remember talk of the event as I was only 7 at the time, and what I remember might be conversation about it happening some time after it actually ocurred.  But the movie deals a bit with players who missed the flight and the guilt felt as a result.  Very sad for your wife's brother.
