SW-MOTECH Crash Bars / Engine Protectors
#1

Everyone on this Forum loves their CB1100. We love walking and spending time with our loved ones even more! Those realities are why I decided to upgrade the engine / crash guards which were on my CB1100 EX. I have never gone down on the street in the 45 years I have been riding motorcycles, but stuff happens. Smile

The guards on the CB1100 when I purchased it were just okay. Although they were made of steel, they were a little thin. The welds were not as nice as they could have been. The finish was good, but the mounting relied too much on u-bolts. The attach points on the CB1100 were too few. I was concerned that if I had a bad incident which placed the total weight of the motorcycle and me on the crash bars, they may snap or bend.

I recently upgraded to SW-MOTECH crash bars:

The cost was $230 and resulted in a thicker, more sturdy, better finished set of bars. The mounting is also significantly enhanced relative to the off-brand bars I had previously. The welds were also much improved. Installation was straightforward. And most importantly, I have the peace of mind that I have a set of bars which can protect me and the motorcycle if something terrible were to happen. Have a great week and I hope you can sneak in a ride today!

Honda OEM chrome crash guards looks and are the best IMHO.

They look well Rdprdp01. I like SW-Motech as a brand, always good quality from them.

Me too. SW MOTO has great design engineers. The material and finishes used are on par with Honda, in my opinion.

I have the same Rdprdp01...they look great, feel sturdy... and as of yet I haven't "tried them out".

I also think the black SW Motech ones look especially good on the EX version because of the lower fins being black.

SW's were already on the 2014 I just picked up. I had Honda versions on the previous CB11 I had years ago. I was actually impressed for the SW's. Won't be changing them out for anything else.

Are the Honda ones as thick tube as the SW?

No, they are not. However, Honda makes a very good engine guard. It uses high-quality steel and has the Honda finish we all know and love. It is engineered to protect the engine. Here is an OEM picture for an engine guard which will fit my 2017 Cb110 EX:

The SW Motech is something of a hybrid engine guard / crash bar. It has thicker steel, more mounts, and higher tensile strength than the Honda equivalent. It is designed to protect the motorcycle and the rider. Note that it extends farther out. Some CB1100 owners find that design to be less aesthetically pleasing than the Honda OEM version Honda. I took this picture of my motorcycle for comparison:

Both products are great additions to a CB1100 base. I think the selection process is driven by aesthetics and desired level of protection. Both options cost about the same and are equally easy to install. I hope you find this additional information helpful. Best of luck. David

It is interesting to see the design contrasts. Fehling go for more of a wrap around style. These came with my bike along with the Fehling saddle bag bars and rear rack.
