In gear and coasting the gear teeth are meshed and turning whether clutch is in or out. Your hearing gear whine, just a little different than when you start off under power in first. That's why it is reminiscent of the sound of a supercharger, which is usually described as a whine.

Was looking at part diagrams for the CB11, and all the gears look to have the same square cut, wonder why only 1st has the sound.
