Any interest in cams?
Yea- saw that video before.

I suppose I need to buy a camera and hit the local strip when I am done. If I am going to break the hp record (might have already) than I guess given the easy local track I should put down some times as well.

Thoughts?

PowerDubs is having fun (most of the time).
It may be a lot of work for only a few HP, but I can appreciate the challenge.

In 1982 I installed a new Chevrolet 350 ci V8 in a 1973 Datsun PL620 pickup, replacing a 1600 cc 4 cylinder.

Before the exchange, with few mods (Weber 2 barrel carb), the 1.6 L would pull Interstate 5 near Gorman at 80 MPH in third, hauling two dirt bikes. It was running great with 100,500 miles on the clock...and a neighbor bought the used engine and trans. I already added a 20 gallon auxiliary fuel tank where the spare tire originally mounted. With the 11.8 stock tank, pulling a trailer (minimum 18 MPG) after the conversion, it had a 572 mile range.

The conversion ended up being around $6,000 (I think the truck new was about $2,800)...nowhere near a practical "investment", but fulfillment of a dream. A friend had a 1970 Datsun with a 327, 2 speed Powerglide and performance was impressive.

My conversion included:
Edelbrock SP2P torque intake manifold
500 CFM Carter AFB 4 barrel carb
Hooker headers, dual exhausts
Hooker motor mounts and fiberglass firewall
New alternator, without a core
New starter, without a core
New water pump
New fuel pump
350 turbo 3 speed auto trans, rebuilt, with shift kit, without a core
Floor mount cable shifter
New drive shaft
Shortened and resplined 2.92:1 differential from a Ford van (tall gearing to reduce tire spin)
Two new rear wheels and tires to match the differential
New rear brakes
New flex fan
Used Corvette radiator, which did not cool below about 30 MPH
New Opticore 4 row radiator, which did not cool below about 30 MPH
New electric fan with auto/off/manual on switch, which solved the low speed cooling issue

It was a dead heat off the line with a new Corvette, up to about 60 MPH (only tested it that far)...but otherwise never raced it.

It was actually a family vehicle...as well as a fun commuter.
It had a camper shell, with 4 rear facing bucket seats, seat belts and carpet, for our 4 kids. Also had a matching Datsun pick up bed utility trailer, with a camper shell. By the time I sold it in 1985, the kids were outgrowing the back, so I removed the shell, seats, belts, carpet, removed the cargo hooks and repainted the bed.

I removed the downshift cable from the carb linkage to the trans, to avoid breaking loose when throttle applied.

Good trip down memory lane.

How about racing down airport runways? [Image: 1e0f1d51df772a88e49e6fdf78460275.png]

Just got back from a long weekend on the other end of the country, had a box waiting for me. I expect a loooong day at work tomorrow, and have a contractor meeting in the evening on Tuesday, but progress will occur at some point later this week.

I envy all you retired guys with all the time in the world.

"I envy all you retired guys with all the time in the world."

Spent today going through my wife's deceased mother's stuff that has been in a storage locker for 8 years. Called in for jury duty for tomorrow, was told to call back at 11:30 tomorrow for instructions. Have physical therapy scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday if, the jury duty doesn't interfere.

Have an appointment with my cardiologist on Wednesday. I'm suppose to call to set up a sleep apnea analysis sometime this week. Trying to find out why my pulse rate remains in the 30's, most the time.

Oh, and have been putting off scheduling surgery for a fistula until I have the time.

But other than that, us "retired guys" do have all the time in the world! Watch what you wish for! [Image: 8068536d1027084bd37004c2f825c89f.png]

Yeah, every time I think about how much more time I'll have after retirement, I look at my wife's parents. They're easily as busy as me, and they've been retired for 15 years. I think the only difference will be that I get to determine my own schedule. It won't be determined for me.

Hey PD, do you really think I could drop a stock exhaust cam into the intake side?? Just to get rid of the nostalgic effect...

Visually they look the same to me so I don't see a physical reason they swap positions.

As far exact IO/IC EO/EC timing comparisons I have not looked at the #'s in that way.

Somewhere towards the start of this thread I listed the stock intake and exhaust specs that Web measured (before they knew the intake had stagger lobes so they only measured 1 lobe at that time) but for your interest it will give you an idea.

Thanks!

Cams are officially in. But now I need to button everything back up, which won’t happen tonight because I am going to spend some time with my wife.

Sorry for the delay and long time. putting these in – I am just being super anal about everything!! Well that plus work, house stuff, life, etc.

Since I am the first to do this I literally had no idea if the lobes were going to clear the cam caps, clear the cylinder head valleys, if the valve springs were going to bind, if the valves were going to contact the pistons, etc. (still possible at high RPM) fingers crossed.

But the biggest delay was simply adjusting the valves and having to purchase new shims several times and wait for them to be shipped.

I initially bought a kit from hot cams which I have used before on my last project which was putting in a retail premade hot cam brand performance cam in an ATV I owned and I also used their shim kit for that engine- sold almost a decade ago now.

But that was a single cylinder LTZ 400, same motor as the DRZ and KlX 400.

I quickly discovered when doing these reground cams on a 16 valve engine I needed more variety than the kit provided.

The factory Honda shims come in essentially half steps from what the hot cams kit offers. So I found myself wanting to be closer than the kit allowed me to be.

Although the kit will get you in spec, again I am being anal.

Also the kit only has a few shims of each size, and I found myself needing many of some sizes.

So I ended up adjusting with the kit first putting everything together, remeasuring, taking it back apart, reshim, reassemble, remeasure, disassemble and reshim, reassemble remeasure, order shims, disassemble reshim, assemble, remeasure, disassemble, order new shims, install etc.

Having fun yet?

If anyone decides to do these cams after I finish – just make sure that your mechanic has plenty of shims in the 2.00 through 2.10 mm sizes.
