Truck tire explosion

Several years ago I got trapped next to a semi on I5. Trailer tire blew out just in front of me. Hunkered down and told the wife to bury her helmet in my back. Wove through the flying debris and thankfully made it through without a scratch. That's the last time I let cars trap me beside a semi.

I fear all trailers are bad news, I avoid them. We had a 5th wheel camper for 18 years and had 3 tires blow. All good tires. Didn't scatter like a semi but still left chunks . When was the last time you saw the same thing happen to a regular auto ?

There is a lot more pressure in trailer tires (even my 5 by 8 has 80 lbs ) and more weight on them as well compared with car tires.

I had a truck tire explode in front of me as I headed down I-10 in southern NM (this was back in the 80s). I heard the explosion and saw these large chunks of rubber headed toward me. Luckily, I had a good sized plexiglass windshield on the bike, so I ducked down behind it. A couple of good sized chunks hit the windshield and shattered it. I think if I hadn't had the shield, those high speed chunks of rubber might have knocked me off the bike.

Because the forest products industry is foremost in my region there are logging trucks everywhere, even on the secondary roads. The fragments of blown retreads litter the highways (we refer to them as "road gators") and I have witnessed several instances of these retreads blowing apart. I think it's past time making retread tires illegal.
