Truck tire explosion - Houtman_imp - 08-29-2018
Yesterday I took my wife to Charleston SC (in CRV) and on the way back on I 26 a rear tire from a tractor trailer in front of my suddenly exploded with big parts of the tire hitting my SUV.
I was very lucky that their was not a big accident because of this . Driver and I stopped and the damage is over $ 1500 on my 2017 CRV.
If a bike had been behind the truck it would have been curtains for the rider, we were doing over 70 and no room to move over because heavy traffic.
Retreads on truck tires can go any time , you see them all over the Interstates , perhaps they should be illegal.

not a day goes by something outrageous doesn't happen on I26. i saw a trailer tire explode in front of me on that same highway on my way home from work a couple of months ago. thankfully was 2 lanes over, so no debris got near me.

Gee ... I'm glad you and your wife are OK. Major Australian roads are littered with the remains of retreads that have come off trucks. I often worry that I'll be the witness to an event such as yours when I'm on the bike. For that reason alone I try to stay clear of trucks.

As I was growing up, my step father was a seasoned long-haul trucker and he always (very adamantly) said to never drive next to one of those trucks any longer than you need to, just for that reason. Retreads can come off at any time, especially at high speed. That stuck in my head and I heed that advice to this day.

I had the same thing happen to me a couple of years ago while I was in my car. The tire exploding sounded like a canon shot and the tire was totally disintegrated.
Fortunately, I wasn't very close and only a few tire fragments hit me without doing any damage.

Several years ago I was a good quarter mile behind a big rig that blew a tire on the trailer. Far enough behind that I was able to avoid the few bits that were tumbling down the freeway. I think I've seen just a couple others - many years apart (one was in Minneapolis - gee, I wonder why they are so burned into ones' brain.........).
First guy never pulled over. But this latest guy did. He knew. Which I guess kinda surprised me.

Years ago, in my car, I was following a van with a mattress strapped to the roof. The mattress caught the wind, the straps broke, and it came sailing off the van and landed right in front of me. I ran over it at about 70 mph with not a moment to react. I would not want to see a motorcyclist hit that thing -- at any speed.

Glad you were in your car. I have been close to several bowouts on my motorcycles over the years and they are frightening. Like a shotgun being shot off, big hunks of rubber flying past, an onnoxious smell and a prolonged weird flapping noise as piece of the tire try to cling to the base of rubber they were bonded to. Ive also wondered why they are still legal.
I wont stay by a truck for any longer than it takes to pass it, I also wont stay behind one because of "dirty air" , plus the fact they block your vision and have the ability to run over a ladder or wooden skid that you can't see until it comes spitting out from under the rig too late for you to do anything about. Trucks and motorcycles, just don't play well together.

There was a "Mythbusters" episode where they tried to recreate this very thing. There was a report of a motorcyclist losing his head when a re-tread blew. Needless to say I haul it past rigs when traveling on the interstate.
