Lithium Ion Batteries
#11
I choose based on value. I would like to try a Li-tech battery, but if I don't have a requirement for it (like maybe Flynrider and Ferret), I'd just as well apply the extra cash elsewhere.

The OEM lead acid battery on my 2103 lasted 5 1/2 years before it started to die. I bought a cheap lithium ion battery that was defective, returned it and bought an expensive lithium ion battery that was also defective - that one left me looking for a jump 75 miles from home. I bought another Yuasa lead acid OEM battery for the next 5 1/2 years - maybe lithium ion (or the next thing) will be 10x better in 2025 but I'm sticking with lead acid for now. I know - it's only 2 datapoints, but that's 2 too many for me. Put me in the "stick in the mud" category as well.

I use OEM Yuasa. When the LI tech is more mature or nuclear batteries Smile come on the market, then maybe.

Flynrider’s report is here: https://r.tapatalk.com/shareLink/topic?s...source=app MMG Lithium Ion Battery

He gives an update towards the end.

Yep. I'm still very happy with it. After 4.5 years it is by far the longest lasting motorcycle battery I've ever owned. By comparison, AGMs lasted about 2 years and conventional lead/acid batteries last 3 years. This is primarily due to the heat here in the desert. The MMG lithium ion on my CB1100 has proven to be unaffected by the summer heat. I have needed to use the cold weather warm up procedure a few times, but sub freezing starts are pretty rare around here.

I recently had an AGM battery die on the old CB750 after just over 2 years (with the usual sudden death failure mode). I considered replacing it with a lithium ion like the one I'm using on the CB1100, but decided against it. The older bike's charging system tends to vary quite a bit over the usual rpm range, while the CB11's charge rate is rock steady from idle to 5K rpm. Most of the problems I've heard about with lithium ion motorcycle batteries have been on older bikes with less stable charging systems. So, for the older CB I decided to go back to the tried and true conventional lead/acid battery. The reduced life and sudden failure mode of the AGM just doesn't work for me, and I'm not willing to risk a lithium ion with the antiquated wobbly charging system.

Good piece EX, agree with all your findings, bms is an absolute must regardless of price, i am considering lion but at the moment i am holding off but appreciate and respect other users choice.
Main reason is the possibility of a fire in a plastic surrounded place that i won't be able to put out until all the energy is dissipated and hopefully extinguishes itself.

So no need for that risk in my case.

...what would be the conversion rate? 1Ah=1kiloton? Talk 'bout skirting disarmament treaties... and never-ever-ever accidentally short one of those Big Grin

Well, either nuclear batteries, or a small anti matter reactor or maybe better, a Mr. Fusion!!!!
