Has anyone tried taking the end cap off the stock muffler and drilling holes in the end of the muffler to get a deeper sound? I have on other bikes, not sure what I would be drilling into or how thick it is. Thanks.

Never did it on the CB but I did it on my old kz440 and it made it much more of a raspy "Cruiser" sound lol.

I didn't like how the gigantic factory muffler looked anyways so I got a Shorty moto gp exhaust tip. It has a very small glass pack but I basically just don't have a muffler

Mufflers are engineered.

I reckon to get "the sound" and maintain some sort of throughput effectiveness (perhaps efficiency?), one would need to understand the dynamics of the design inside and out before the first hole is bored.

I can't imagine many owners going through that thought process.

Just saw it off and collect the fines.

100% but I'll take drilled holes in muffler sound over quiet factory muffler sound anyday lol

In that perspective it wasn't worth buying a new exhaust for a 1981 that I grabbed for i think $600 at the time

Nice.

The CB specimen appears to have nicely seasoned Cormanus headers:

I've modded several exhausts, with varying results;
Honda CL450, the spot welds on the scrambler pipe were cracking, bike ran terrible and sounded awful. Had a friend drop a tig weld on each dot and the bike ran great, but had no sound.
Kawi Vulcan 1500, 2 into 2, hole-sawed the end cap out, sounded great and seemed to run better.
Honda 750, 4 into 2, removed and cut off two inches of the snooters, sounded really good, loved it.
Another Honda 750, 4 into 1, had a big Yoshimura can on it, way too loud. Re-wrapped it four times, never did get it right.
Honda CB1100, 4 into 1, drilled the end plate so much there was almost no end plate left. Barely made a difference. Still have the bike, tho.
My NTM Yamaha V-Star 1300 came with a Cobra pipe. Sounds pretty good.

I drilled and removed the inner pipe on my ‘89 FZR sounded great for free.

I did eventually buy a full Vance & Hines pipe for it…

…. as well as their powerpak, FCR flatslide carbs, cams, FZR 400 swingarm (shorter and aluminum), wider rear wheel, dropped the front sprocket a tooth…Fox remote resovoir rear shock, Race tech front fork mods, I can’t leave anything stock. [Image: 8366a3f01c09586464af1b8289dc5850.png]
