My EX has pipe in a pipe chrome headers, so I dont have the yellowing/staining problem that the stainless headers have. That said, I have on occasion helped a friend polish his headers with Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish. I have also used it on all kinds of metal polishing projects, and it does say it can be used for all metals on the can. Works great on chrome as well, and is not abrasive.
I have a feeling that the amount of rubbing needed to restore stainless headers may have something to do with how long the interval is between cleaning/polishing. My friend does his headers every six months or so, and from what I have seen helping him once and a while, did not take an excessive amount of time to get very nice results. I remember spending the money to get a wimpy little tooth paste style tube of Simichrome polish back in the day, but now all I use for everything is Mothers. Best of all Mothers can be found at auto parts stores like NAPA, O'reillys, and Autozone, as well as Walmart, for around $10 for a 10 oz. can. https://www.autozone.com/wash-cleaners-a...icle=false
As others have said, best results are with a nice clean soft rag. That rag will turn black as the polish works. As a result, I keep some wood popsicle sticks around to use for transferring small amounts of polish paste from the can onto my rag or onto what I am polishing. That keeps the polish paste in the can clean. All things considered, Mothers is my go to polish for everything, and I personally cant see any reason to experiment with other products.
