where is the sticky post to first time oil change?
#1
Hello all, this forum has been so helpful to me with owning my CB with everything I've needed to do with the bike. The first time oil change thread by Ferret was absolutely great. An online friend of mine has a Shadow she wants to change oil on and I wanted to show her the thread on this website but I cannot seem to locate it? If I remember correctly I thought it was a permanent post. Can someone direct me to it or has it moved? Its late and I'm tired and sometimes that can be the reason for not seeing clearly. Also from reading Shadow forums it looks like those nikes aren't as easy to get to the drain bklt as the CB. Lol

I just moved your post buckwheat. Ferret's thread is http://cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=202

Be warned: the pictures no longer display which may make it slightly less helpful to your friend.

Thank You! I knew about the pics and thats ok anyway as ot will be a general guide for first time "mechanic" changing oil on a different bike anyway, a Shadow. Ferret's thread is well laud out its useful across the board for first timers. Thanks again to all

buckwheat, just one more point for your friend's oil change. The 750 Shadows usually have the dipstick towards the front of the engine (very early ones were aft of the clutch).

Several Shadow owners have tried checking oil level while the bike is idling, like you'd check the ATF on a car. Once they have the dipstick unscrewed, oil comes spraying out, so they try to put it back in quickly. If it isn't perfectly aligned, the metal tip of the dipstick can get lodged in the clutch/timing gear teeth.

This has mangled the dipstick tip or broken it off, or in a few cases, slightly indenting the gears enough to introduce a slight knocking noise. Engine off to check oil always, bike standing straight up, after it has warmed up a few minutes and then allowed to drain back down a few minutes.

Interesting. Thanks. She finished though and already out on the road. She had to borrow a 17mm wrench from work because she doesn't have wrenches but outside of that I guess she did ok. Thanks to all who contributed.
