Back Pack Parachute/Balloon ejection system
#11
ejection system require manual intervention where you don't have time to push the button. ejection seat like fighter airplane that pops you up 100ft in the air then use parachute to land softly hopefully not on highway, makes more sense. the problem is under the seat need 10 lbs TNT and it might explode unvolunteeringly sending rider up in the clear sky.

I don't thing it would require too much modification for engineers to produce a device using airbag technology to lift you off the seat (hopefully without crushing too many vertebrae). But, I don't see any company rushing to be the first to be sued after their motorcycle ejection seat howitzers you to a less than ideal landing spot. Springing up off the pegs has also long been my plan of action for the impending collision scenario. Although these days it is mostly a mental exercise Smile

So, for the parachute to work, it looks like you'd need to rocket up to about 700 feet (70 stories!). For that to happen to an "average" 180lbs person in about .25 second (anything less and you're probably going to hit whatever you're aiming at anyhow at 60mph), you'd need a rocket engine capable of about 900hp to get the rider to minimum safe distance for the chute to open. If that doesn't seem ludicrous enough, the speed at which that motor moves you to that 700 foot altitude is 2800 ft/s, or 1,900mph. That's 348G's of force applied to your body.

I'm pretty sure for this to work that the rocket motor would be cost prohibitive, and even if not, it would be too large, and even if not, it would turn you into a fine goo upon activation. Or just rip the apparatus off your body, along with any limbs or whatever that may be in the way. And then, once your gooey/limbless body is safely floating above the accident scene, who knows where you'll come down, based on prevailing winds, etc. Who knows, you could come down on a freeway in front of a semi tractor trailer and get beat into an even more gooey mess.

I prefer to take my chances with the on-coming vehicle. Unless you're on a cruiser, you're most likely to go over the top of it, anyhow, jumping or not.
