I would like to have the springs on the oem shocks removed so I can have them painted. Do you know of any companies that will do this? I researched spring compression tools and it looks too dangerous to mess with in my opinion.

I wouldn't know about getting them done "outside", but if you search this forum I am sure there has been a post regarding spring removal and replacement. If you are used to doing mechanicals it is not too difficult.
Cheers, and good luck.

It's not at all dangerous if you have the right tool, and auto parts stores rent them (at least they do here).
Barring that, Google either motorcycle suspension or custom suspension with your zipcode. Most metro areas have at least one shop that does bike suspension work. The shop in my area will take the springs off for a few bucks if you bring them in off the bike. And return them when you're ready.

Update: I took the shocks into my local Honda dealer to have them remove the springs. They had them for a few days and called in a racetech employee. They could not figure out how to remove the spring. They suspect that this can't be done.
Has anyone tried this on the stock shock?

It may be this is not a disassembleableable unit. After describing some basic inspections, the shop manual says "replace the shock absorber assembly if necessary." There's no info or other detail aside from removing and replacing the whole thing. See page 13-15.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Much appreciated!
It doesn't look like I will be able to paint the shock spring. The look I was going for is the black spring on the oem shock for the 2014 CB1100 black edition. Here is a link:

Hopefully, someone will eventually want to sale these on the forum.
Kind regards,
Allen

AllenM,
It is probably for the best that you decided not to remove and paint your springs. Unless you are going to use spray-on air dry paint (not very durable) or a Plasti-Dip air-cure type product, I would not recommend it.
Powder coating is the most durable coating, but bad for springs. I had some springs powder coated and the heat of curing (approx. 450 F) totally ruined the temper of the springs. They became limp as a wet noodle...

Doesn't the Japanese version come with black springs?
