My '13 standard has the smaller tank, so I can go approx 145 miles before the fuel gauge starts to blink that I need gas soon. My average MPG is around 48, but I've gotten as high as 52mpg on our Rocky Mtn. "premium" 91 octane. Bought one of those MSR backpacker fuel canisters for emergency fuel on road trips. Hope I never need to use it.

Can some knowledgeable member comment on this? What would happen if the CB ran out of petrol? Could you just tip some into the tank, start up and take off again? Or would something else be required?

You know, they come out of the crate with no fuel and all they do is add it and fire it up.

I could find nothing in the service manual about anything special about it. Not in the Fuel section or general maintenance section.

So, put in some gas, turn on the bike, let the fuel pump pressurize the system and start it.

We have had a couple members run out of gas, and they reported no issues with restarting after putting some gas in it. Just follow procedure as outlined above by popgun.

I've run CARS with electric fuel pumps and FI out of fuel, and - aside from that it's hard on the fuel pump - it's no problem in getting it restarted.

When you key on the ignition, that electric-motor burst you hear is the fuel pump. It shuts off right away because it's programmed not to run when there is no charge to the system/engine not running. But to prime things, car or motorcycle, turn your key on and off...not quickly, but turn it on until the buzzing stops, then off for a couple of seconds...do that about three or four times and you should be good to go.

As for range: I haven't tested it. But everyone here seems to agree the onboard fuel-economy computer reading is pretty accurate; and it tells me I'm getting about 45-47 mpg - varying.

When I have the reading set to ongoing fuel economy, I spend a lot of time getting 54 or so; but in town I accelerate hard. Out in the country I have mountains; Both cases drop the economy to down below 35; so that's where it goes.

A couple of weeks ago I burned a tankful on my '13. Back roads at around 65 mph with almost no stops. The gauge started flashing at 145 and I rode it 20 more miles for a total of 165. I think I cut it kinda close on that one. At interstate speeds (~75mph) the gauge flashes at 132-135.

My gauge warning is pretty predictable. Goes off after 3 gallons burned like clockwork.

The stated capacity of 14.8 liters works out to 3.9 gallons, but the most I've ever put in is 3.6 gallons.

Here my five cents worth, always changing miles to Km and Gallons to l I'll let you dudes have a go at the conversions.
Yesterday left home at 1:36pm and got home at bang on 5pm, had one cup of tea, rode 189.6km and used $14 Aust on fuel @ $1.29 a liter thats 10.76l in total.
Roads were all non highway with 11kn of dirt/gravel.
Had to come to a stop three time as dairy farmers were walking their herds to the shed for milking. No traffic lights and only roundabouts to slow me a little.
Why the fuel usage, hills winding roads and the twist of the right wrist. Usually fill the tank before the low fuel indication near Maffra, I was of the beaten track and did not want to divert into a town.
2011, 12,000km
Thats all from me for the next few weeks.
