Where I live near Seattle, I won't save much time on a bike. We cannot legally split lanes. I may save a couple minutes in an hour commute to school.
Where it really helps is when I need to park on campus for school. The University is anti-car and makes students park in the lots on the edge of campus at $300/quarter. That would leave me to walk 45 minutes between the car and class.
I can park a motorcycle on the back side of the Mechanical Engineering building where most of my classes are for $40/quarter.
