Flat Track Racing in Del Mar

Sounds like you should approach the track operators and get some flat tracking going!

That's not how Pterodactyl describes the meeting. He said you were incredibly warm and welcoming. Then again, Pterodactyl has had a very hard life and your standoffishness most likely didn't register with him.

LOL. Nicely done, MG.

I'm not sure whether or not to be pleased you're going back to work. Tongue

On Sunday morning I loaded up on Dayquil and together with my wife, brother and two sons, made my way to the flat track races in Del Mar. It was a lot of fun. The races were held in the Del Mar Arena, not on the thoroughbred track for which Del Mar is famous. The arena is considerably smaller - 1/8 mile around - with bleacher seating along the short straightaways. That made everything much closer, much louder, and more thrilling. There were plenty of spills but, fortunately, no serious injuries. Everyone who crashed was able to get up and walk away.

The kids were fun to watch on their mini bikes and the pros on their specially built flat track bikes were amazing. Much faster than I expected on such a small course. They had some vintage bikes including 1937 and 1939 Indians racing and, in separate races, street legal Harleys and just a whole bunch of other classes. I saw Roland Sands during the intermission and wanted to tell him how much I like his designs and that I had just purchased one of his jackets but felt foolish and didn't want to intrude as he seemed engaged in conversation with someone.

I did, however, speak to Jennifer from Cerberus Motorcycles for a bit. She was super nice and invited me to their upcoming Moto Monday for hosted food and drinks which I plan to attend. We talked a bit about the CB1100 project they have going and she told me it's looking great and they're waiting on some parts for the front end. Unfortunately, I missed Dave who I believe was there as well. Maybe when I go I'll be able to get a shot of my CB alongside the Cerberus CB.

Here are some photos I took from the races:

All the racers lined up at the start of the event and the national anthem was sung. Everyone stood, the men removed their hats, we covered our hearts and enjoyed the moment.

Just a few of the many kids who raced that day. I wish my parents had gotten me into racing as a child.

There were a number of vintage bike races. If I remember correctly, #6 took this one.

The guy on the blue Yamaha seemed to be on a casual Sunday morning ride. He rode slowly around the track as the others ripped through the corners and flew down the straights. Still, he was out there, doing it. The Scramblers did well but the guy in red on what I believe is a Triumph took it.

These HDs were fast and loud and seemed to be hard to handle on the dirt. The guy in the middle won each of the races he was in.

I took a few short videos that captured the riders sliding through the corners which I failed to get in photos. If I can figure out how to load them here, I'll put them up. Sliding through the turns is really what the short track is all about. Overall, it was a great day and a perfect way to celebrate my birthday.

Wow a couple of the new Ducati scramblers out there. I think the guy on the blue bike was on a Yamaha Triple from the 80s lol

Glad you and the family had fun.

Thanks Cormanus and ride4now. My next adventure will be next weekend when I hope to attend at least one meeting/event/ride during the Mods vs. Rockers here in San Diego.
