Flat Track Racing in Del Mar - metallyguitarded_imp - 01-03-2015
I am lucky enough to be turning a year older in about two weeks. As part of my celebration, my family and I are going to watch the flat track races being held on the Del Mar race track (used for horse racing normally). I've never been to flat track races but saw them in one of the recent motorcycle movies - Why We Ride or On Any Sunday: The Next Chapter (I think the latter). It looks like a lot of fun. I plan to take a lot of pictures and will post them here. Apparently, they will have amateur and professional racers on different kinds of bikes. Can't wait!

My younger brother was an AMA professional flat tracker ( while I raced motocross) so I attended many flat track races. The Mile races are the real thrillers when a dozen 750 Harleys, Triumphs and Yamaha 750s would come thundering down the straight, sit up and throw it sideways at 110 mph sliding all the way around the curve, then straightening it out and hugging the tank down the other straight, but short tracks are fun too. I think you will come away with an amazement of what riders can do on a flat dirt surface. Actually the new Bonnevilles, and Kawasaki Ninja 650s are doing real well in short tracks, and there is a husband and wife combo that are quite successfull...MEes I think their name is.

I knew you came from a large family of riders but didn't realize you had racing in your blood! Impressive. If the new Bonnie is doing well, I have to wonder how the CB would fair on a short track. I've actually owned both a newer model Bonnie and a Kawasaki Ninja 650. I can see how the 650 would do well but I'm surprised to hear that the Bonnie does too. It's a great bike but not one I picture sliding around a dirt track! Who's on this forum and crazy enough to enter their CB into the race? Hmmm, Insolentsquid, what are you doing in a couple weeks?

You will love it MG. Flat Track racing is a gas. Used to be a lot of local races around here in the early 70's but that's all gone now. I miss it.

Very cool. Thanks redbirds. I'm excited about it. My wife asked, "So, what do you want to do on your birthday?" Of course, I immediately developed a cat that ate the canary grin on my face and told her about the races. To my surprise, she readily agreed and even said it sounded fun. My boys are excited to go then my brother and his fiancé said they were in. I think my parents are even going to go (bringing earplugs for mom). No one else in my family rides. It's really great that they're all doing this with me. Not that you have to be a rider to enjoy the races but they would never think to go see something like this if I hadn't brought it up.

That should be awesome. I look forward to reading about your experience. I'm also glad to see flat track racing experiencing a resurgence as of late and hope that it continues to gain momentum.

haha i saw this and almost fainted. Here in Delaware, there is a Delmar..with a dirt track (mainly run modifieds). And its (sorta) by the beach, about 30 miles. Really cool that they still do flat track racing.

Went for a very long ride last year to see some of this flat track racing. Met Pterodactyl for the first time and got very cold once or twice.
