TSR 4 Aluminum Air Funnels
#1

Just an FYI guys

I ordered the TSR 4 aluminum air funnels but sent them back to Takashi. The funnels themselves were pieces of art, but.....

You have to enlarge the 4 holes on the air box to mount them and you also have to drill 2 additional holes in the cover.

I didn't know this when I ordered them, and TSR's instruction sheet, now updated, omitted these step. I asked Takashi how they enlarged the holes of if they were going to offer the cover with this process already done. TSR recommended that I use a Dremmel like tool to do this enlargement and they have no plans to offer a modified cover for sale. Without a precise way to cut the holes, you'll have the potential for air leaks.

As for the two additional holes, TSR says without them, the bike has idle issues.

No thanks..Bike runs too nice now to screw with it

As always Takashi made right and issued me a full refund.

Those 2 extra holes would let in unfiltered air unless they led to some chamber within the air system.... Wonder what they do exactly. Anyway its good you caught that. Messing with the air box too much can cause some bikes to never run exactly right after that. Actually I was kind of surprised that removing the snorkel didn't screw something up.

Without his Power Commander, it would have.

HondaJon,
To bad about the funnel project, the gains almost seem worth all the effort. You're right, could have turned into a nightmare though. I'm just getting the TSR cover and calling her DONE.

Good call ACK - The PC V, A K&N filter, the TSR single filter funnel and a CAT free exhaust, in my opinion, seems to be the best way to go. I also run the TSR map. She runs soomth as glass right now and pulls like a train.

I am DONE with my performance mods unless I can get a smokin deal on some Ohlins shocks....

Deanohh,

I never did recieve an explaination as to why the holes were needed. All of that work just to get the cover off, the lack of a precise way to enlarge the four holes and the 2 mystery vents just didn't weigh well with me. In theory, they would lean the bike out a bit...

I had a nice conversation with an old man on an old Kawi GPZ1100 out in the desert a few years ago. He was an old racer with some interesting stories, a terrible limp, and he really knew his stuff. One thing he said has stuck with me ever since: "We spent a lot of years and a lot of money trying to get around that track faster than each other, and one of the things I learned is that Mr. Kawasaki knows a lot more about making a motorbike run well & go fast than Misters K & N do." (Referring to K&N air filters.)

Airboxes are beneficial, magical things and it's generally not a good idea to fiddle with them. They do a much better job of keeping the engine heat out of the intake than pods or plain filters do (cool intake = more efficiency & power.) And the factory engineers generally know more about pressure-waves, turbulence, harmonics, and air-flow than your average aftermarket mountebank.

Also my bone-stock little Harley 883 pretty much ruled the roost in Pueblo, CO against all the big (1300+cc) twins and FXRs with straight pipes, aftermarket carbs, ported/polished intake tracts, and some guys even running straight air-horns without any filtration at all.
Aside from suspension, stock is almost always best IMO.

I was going to order these for myself, many thanks for the heads up, I'll give them a miss, not looking to do any further power mods, waiting on wire spoked wheels
