A question,or theory about removing engine covers. - FLYTYM_imp - 11-09-2020
I need to remove the engine covers and replace them with a set I'm having powder coated and need to get the covers off the engine. Don't want to pry or pound on anything so I've got an idea. Can't I tap some threads in a few of the mounting bosses in each cover and have these act as pushers to get the covers off?

In my experience, FLYTYM, no prying or pounding is required - a gentle tap with rubber-faced mallet is all that's required. The mating faces are EXTREMELY thin, thinner than I've experienced before on other 'bikes, and the slicon gasket material is correspondingly thin.
Why not have a go with one cover, before you start to drill & tap threads?

No drilling at all,I'm using the existing mounting holes on the cover.

Just a couple taps with a small dead blow - and they come right off.
I've had mine off several times.

You would not be able to tap the hole right to the bottom, so you'd need to grind the threads off the lower portion of the bolt you use, in order for the end to push against the crankcase. Tapping the holes might also weaken the area. In my opinion, it's just not necessary. As 'Dubs says, a couple of taps from a soft-faced mallet is all that's needed.
