Idle problem resolved - 68lupe_imp - 05-20-2016
Last weekend took off for a trip to Orlando to visit with my son. I take all the back roads north of Tampa to get there. The bike ran great. On the way back home I was heading through Clermont. I noticed the bike was acting up with low rpm of about 500. I just chalked it up to a bit of heavy traffic. Decided to pull over for a fill up & after I cranked back up, it shot to 2000 then after taking off, it went back to 1500. I'm sure this sounds familiar as I've seen a few threads on this. When I got home, got on the forum for info & did all my resets. But none of them helped. It was still on 1500 rpm.
Drove it for a day, even re-filled with fresh gas to no avail. Went ahead & scheduled appt. for Honda dealer. Took it in this morning. They did a total check, vacuum leaks, etc... Guess what my problem was? Zip ties on my throttle cable. I couldn't believe it because ties had been there for months. BUT...I adjusted the handle bars a couple days before heading over to Orlando & evidently tightened those ties a bit. Enough that when I hit a few bumps on my way back it tightened those cables too much causing the high idle. Once they cut off those zip ties, it was back to normal. Weird thing about it is, problem didn't occur for about 100 miles.
So check your zip ties guys when adjusting your bars.

Thank you 68. I cut off the zip ties when I put on bar risers. Now I know not to put any back on.

I understand how a zip-tie could cause your RPM to increase, but how can it cause it to decrease to 500 RPM, as you described? My bike experienced the low (about 500) RPM condition before stalling on three different occasions now. Mysteriously the problem has corrected itself after storing it over night and riding it the next day. Haven't experienced the condition in almost two months now.

Yeah not sure about that 500 either. Prob. different issue that just happened at same time. But do know the zip ties were cause of 1500. It's running great now.

Yeah, I have riser as well that probably contributed to issue. Live & learn.

My guess would be that the throttle isn't closed all the way, the ECM gets erroneous readings from the sensors and commands the IACV to close too much. Just a SWAG. Maybe a dumb one

rearranged the 2 throttle cables a bit, but that did not resolve my persisting low idle to stall issue
