Completed First Oil Change (DIY) - venturer434_imp - 11-03-2016
Finally completed the first oil change myself.
- Oil Filter came off easily with the std oil wrench.
- No major issues overall, checked the chain , throttle play.. everything was fine.
- Installed new Honda OEM oil filter ( Hand tight only)
- Replenished it with Honda recommended oil.( Was careful not to overfill by watching the oil sight glass window)
- After draining out all the used oil from the bike , I dropped off the oil to a recycling depot. Noticed very fine shiny material on the bottom of Blitz oil collector. I use this oil collector to drain the oil on my 2001 Triumph Bonneville as well and have never cleaned it after emptying all the used oil. This time I decided clean this to watch for any shiny deposits during my next oil change..
- Feels great and my weekend has already started..

This is why I cut the oil filters open at least for a few changes just to be sure nothing looks like it is starting to fail.

That "shiny stuff" is normal for the first couple of oil changes. Sometimes, there's a silver sheen on top of the oil (looking at the drain pan).
Don't freak out - it's supposed to be like that.
Oh yeah - and congratulations on your 1st oil change !

Congrats! Doing routine maintenance on your own bike really improves the ownership experience.
On my Ural the engine and transmission plugs are magnetic and it s routine to see swarf whenever you perform service, 2500km is the recommended interval. Chunks showing up are a cause for concern though. Russian vs Japanese engineering and manufacturing - both earned their reputation.

Yep. Changed mine not too long ago. The oil was still pretty clean tho but went ahead and changed anyway.

About to my first oil change on my "used" 2013, (1,600 miles) and notice a screw in the middle of the oil level window. What is the screw for?
Also, can't see to oil level line, I suspect/hope its over-filled.
The filler opening has a knurled plug, is this standard? Looks hard to grab hold of.

The little screw is connectd to a wiper on the inside of the window. When you turn it, it wipes the window.
The knurled plug is most likely a replacement made by one of our members and sold to a bunch of us. The original is a plastic plug that with a 'blade' I guess you call it that you grab.
The oil is pretty clear, or light honey colored and is probably over the upper limit line. When you drain it, you will see what is going on.
