Got an issue,anybody else? - FLYTYM_imp - 11-26-2020

My bike has an issue with finding neutral when it's cold. The transmission easily goes into neutral but the indicator shows the FLASHING DASH and the bike won't start with the kickstand down. Once the bike warms up everything is fine. Could be a sticky neutral switch?

Without looking at the wiring diagram, it could be sticky. But you may want to check the connector for corrosion or proper seating first.

The green neutral light is operated by a ball-detent switch under the engine, and is very reliable. The LCD display with the flashing bars is controlled by the gear position switch under the countershaft sprocket cover. It is a rotary switch turned by a slot in the end of the shift drum.

As Lord Popgun says, it is likely connection or corrosion problem at its plug-in. However, another forum member had a similar problem, and found that the roll pin on the switch's rotating shaft had fallen out. In this case, it might be just loose, but ready to fall out. Easy to check, but be sure you note the pin's position, as the shaft can be rotated 180 degrees out of phase.

Nice call PD. I forgot about the member with the pin problem.

@peking
Really interesting for trouble-shooting, but...
any chance you could add a simple sketch or part# or sth of
- ball-detent switch
- countershaft sprocket cover
- the roll pin
It all sounds good, but when I am trying to locate this stuff in the service manual I get nowhere. I assume this means that I am simply not familiar enough with the pieces you mention. May be others have the same problem.

J3, here ya go: https://www.partsfish.com/oemparts/a/hon/52f28bd9f870021404ec5a2a/left-rear-cover Item 14

See section 19 in the service manual for the switch. In the older 13/14 manual it is page 19-38. Will be in the same section in a newer manual.

I did have the kick stand off to shorten it awhile ago,I'll have to look at this when the bike comes apart for OPERATION FACELIFT.
I got this mixed up with the kick stand switch,is 14 in the diagram the neutral switch?

No. The neutral switch, for the starting interlock and lighting the N is here: https://www.partsfish.com/oemparts/a/hon/52f28bdef870021404ec5a2d/crankcase

Item 8.

Oops, sorry, LP was there first with the parts diagrams. Wish I thought of it before I took my engine out and stripped it for some good pictures!

The shift drum and switch are actually from a different bike. The CB1100 is a bit different but works the same. Note that the roll pin is offset in the shaft to be sure it isn't installed 180 degrees out.

PD, does the 2014 have a neutral light AND the N on the panel?
