2014 rear wheel knocking noise - dunebuggy_imp - 07-30-2024
Hi everybody,
New owner (2 months) of a 2014 1100 A.
Great bike !
This morning went for a ride for about an hour. On my way back after a light, I started to hear a knocking, kinded clangy, noise around the rear wheel ONLY when accelerating, so afew clang during 1st gear and 2nd gear after all good.
At arrival I put the bike on center stand and simulate by gently applying the rear brake, same noise, hard to say precisely but it looks like every half wheel rotation.
Chain is clean and no heavy tight spot, slack is 1 1/2 inch
Wondering what happened during the ride ?
The knocking is very present only during acceleration and hard to say if it s from the rear wheel or the front sprocket

Sprocket teeth looks fine, smooth operation, 14mm bolt tight but it moves a bit ,very little, when I grab it. Is that normal ?

Does the chain have any "kinks". Parts of it that seem tight and didn't swivel well? I've had that happen before. Had to replace the chain. Also, you might want to check the rear wheel dampers. I've replaced mine a couple times now. Also check that the rear wheel is aligned properly.

The 14mm bolt moves? I had one come out once and punch a hole in the cover.

You said the noise appeared while accelerating, and back home you 'simulated it' with the rear brake - what does that mean (other than you heard a nice in both cases) ? What was your assumption ?
And how many miles on bike, tire, chain, etc. ?

No, the bolt is tight, just the sprocket, very small play,very small

Put it on the center stand, in first gear apllied the brake gently and gave a bit gas.

Yes, i'm thinking the dampers, the chain has no kink that I can see or feel when I turn it free

Well,
noise is gone,
The interior of the front casing sprocket was extremely gunky, the bike has 60 000km, and it might be that some heavy packed gunk was hittting periodicly(?) the little alumimium joint between the aluminium cover and the engine.

This happened to me. Had the brake pads changed by Honda, and the front brakes started tapping/rattling on decel. Quick adjustment made it right, the tech was super embarrassed.
When I read the first post, I immediately thought "brakes?", but a kinked chain would make sense too. Lots a people don't love their chains the way you're supposed to, with a used bike it would be a prime culprit.
