I agree that nitrogen in road going vehicles is a gimmick. Nitrogen is sold here as an 'upgrade' because it should result in longer periods between topping up the tyre pressure. The larger nitrogen molecule (when compared to the oxygen molecule) is slower at permeating the tyre carcas so therefore nitrogen stays in the tyre longer, 3 to 4 times longer. The motorist is then encouraged to check their tyres even less frequently!! This rather scientific paper explains in more detail: http://www.getnitrogen.org/pdf/graham.pdf

Ausieflyer,

I read that on another site last year. Tongue in cheek the poster then said that over time as the O2 leaked out, and you refilled the tire with more air, over time you would have all N2 for free!! and that was his story and he was sticking too it Smile

Originally used in aircraft tires because it doesn't support combustion.

It's also used to fill the bags our snacks come in, as it helps retain the foods freshness and enhance shelf life.

That's always been my theory. You start with 78% nitrogen. Next time you top off the tire (to replace the oxygen that permeated through the rubber) you end up with 85% nitrogen and so on. After topping off the tire a few times, you should be pretty close to 100%.
