I think that is pretty darn close. I've been using kerosene with a toothbrush and a grunge brush for years for this purpose, works great. Don't have to go nutz and do this all that often, guess it depends on the roads & weather your ride in, but I lube my chain at least every 500 miles or less and do a complete cleaning after maybe 3K miles or so...seems to work for me.

Kerosene also is great when working on old guns.
Old Gunsmith trick they all have a jug of kerosene and real fine steel wool on their workbench
