Hi,

GoPro mic sound is not the best so another alternative is a separate handheld recorder with a lavalier mic mounted close to exhaust. Here is my personal setup in case a member is interested.

The microphone I’m using is a Pro Lavalier Microphone JK MIC-J 044 purchased on ebay for around $35


I found a good location on my ASAHI pannier case frame to mount the lav mic above the exhaust…




I wrapped some electrical tape around the mic and sealed it with silicon…


Finally, I took a piece of foam and cut out a spot for the Tascam DR 100 MK III. Not pictured is another piece of foam I lay on top to keep things from flying around when riding and recording videos.


Note: You'll need to sync the audio from the recorder with your GoPro vid and that's it. Hope this helps.

It will be interesting to hear/see the result of that, appears to be stealthy enough so the recorder is not stolen.
Was wondering if the mic also picks up engine noise transmitted through the frame since it is connected to it, but that could also have a positive effect.
And just in case it rains does that matter to the mic?

Certainly a solution i have not thought about but i'm sure you've tested it out and my helmet mounted cam has an issue with wind noise and i also have no external mic input.

Think i found a new use for a piece of leftover sheepskin instead of "dead cat", must try that out soon, thanks.

I think this could be a good solution if your having problems with wind noise. The GoPro does the same thing so I’ll work on creating a video so you can hear the difference. The best sound for me is a mix between both mics. I isolated the mic from the frame by stuffing it into a small piece of foam and then wrapping it with the black wind muff in picture. Also, the bike was left outside twice during heavy rains with no problems at all.

Thanks, i will try something similar today and try to start the camera first, go to the sound recorder and show it on the camera then start the audio record button and clap twice on camera for synchro purposes, see what happens, never tried this before but i'll let you know how it went.

Yeah, no doubt superior results with your Lavalier configuration.

Oh yes, that's very presentable, i guess you have lowered the input volume on the tascam, it sounds nice ( Of course ).
When i tried mine today i had it just on top of the seat and the mic volume was way too loud so i have some adjusting to do, i have just the cheapest little recorder but i'm working on it.

Clapping on the video did work, it actually lined up with the sound claps on the video recorder's audio channel, very simple to find and shuffles along just fine.
