But the table requires careful reading and does actually not address me initial post. Here is why.If I read it right (?) the table is established like this :
Police arrives at 100 accident scenes, if a m/c involved +1 for m/c accidents, if cycle has fairing +1 for the exposure count, etc.
Now, it does not account for whether the fairing (or the sissy bar) has caused more serious injuries than would have been without.
Why ? because that it very hard to judge for the cop and the paramedics, and not too conclusive either. Only the doctors could say for sure.

What i’ve been trying to say is this. If we ignore Hollywood style accidents (flying over a cliff etc), anything that might swing or roll around and hit your neck is certainly more a risk than the saddlebags which may just hit your toes.
The handlebar doesn’t count as extra risk (because she’s not added and not a luxury), but ape slingers and sissy bars do, because you could ride without them but chose otherwise.

I doubt a sissy bar would hit anyone’s head.

Any argument for safety in my opinion would be getting stuck on the bike as it slides because of a sissy bar or leg caught in a saddlebag instead of getting away from the bike.

(click on for details) I'm not sure I understand the chart. I'd think that if accident rate is less than exposure rate then that means that the mod actually makes the bike safer (to first level, not taking into account other factors that this doesn't account for.) Or am I missing something?

In any case, even if a sissy bar increased accident rate (which I suppose I could see happening if some significant percentage of folks had a tall stack of luggage tied to it), I can't see how that the sissy bar itself would increase the likelihood of injury in the event of an accident.

It's just one of those statistical glitches a good salesman/politician/lawyer can use to plant a seed of doubt and sell you something you don't want or need. In reality though, one would need A LOT more data to find any causality between any of these mods and accidents, and how many of these resulted in injuries, and whether the injuries were caused by modifications.

I actually just bought a backpack that has a similar concept... duffle bag with backpack straps, however it has MOLLE on it, so I'm looking at having a few vertical bars thrown in the middle...

What do you think about a design like this? I was thinking a rectangular plate close to the middle to hold a back rest for the Mrs. But do you think the overall look of this would still go with the style of CB11?
