I think in ALL forums, oil discussions are HUGE. which I find amazing considering the few oil related failures we read about in motorcycles (as in zero)
It's because oil is such an excellent lubricant—both for engines and forums.

Yep, nothing quite like being well oiled.
Cheers

Update : I got the test results back from Blackstone and the news was good. After running all summer (and fall) in some pretty ugly temps, 3600 miles total, the switch to synthetic Rotella did the trick. The viscosity reading in the report was actually higher than expected. Much better than my results with the dino version.
What did the viscosity @100c burn down to?
Hey Ack,
The cSt Viscosity @ 100C came out at 17.6. Blackstone's expected average for the sample was 11.6 - 15.3. Some of that can be attributed to make-up oil that was added at 2500 miles, but overall it's still pretty good.
By comparison the dino Rotella that I ran and tested a few summers back came out at 7.0 after 3K miles of summer riding. Samples for cooler months were in the normal range, so I surmised that the heat was having a significant effect on the viscosity break down.

Thanks for the reply.
That is an awesome number for the miles with a wet clutch. People love Rotella for air-cooled bikes, that number shows why. Your bike seems easy on oil and is likely showing little wear in the results. Nice

Thank you.
I bought my bike used with ~1500 miles, and the dealer told me to change the oil because they weren't sure it had been done by the PO. It shifted fine with whatever was in it. I replaced it with Mobil 1 racing 4t 10W-40 because it was readily available and it's a nice quality oil. I'd used Mobil1 in a modern Triumphs without problem. However, I don't recommend it for the CB1100. After Mobil1, the engine promptly developed a camshaft rattle down low (I gently adjusted the camshaft balancer and that helped), and it shifts a little less well. I'm coming up on the 4,000 mile oil change, and I'll probably use Honda 10W-30...but I'm tempted to get full synthetic 10W-30 motorcycle (but non-Honda) oil because it's available much closer to me than the Honda dealer.
