When I put my bike on a stand, and turn the front wheel with my hands, it doesn't spin freely as it should - it takes more force to spin the front than the rear wheel. Then there is a light scraping noise. There is little doubt on my part, that both come from the brakes.
Additional data points: the brake pads are not new and not at EOL, the brakes do otherwise work just fine, same pads on for at least 1000 miles.
First question : any explanation ?
Second question : is there a low effort fix ? some adjustment of sorts ?

It is normal for brake pads to lightly contact the rotor.
The pads on the front are larger than the rear- and there are double of them- as well as the rotors being larger which gives them more leverage.
So you think it is just normal ?

You could manually push the pads back in a little and then back out onto the disc with the brake lever a few times and then see if its any better. I've seen mechanics push sticking pads back with a screwdriver inbetween pad and disc but I wouldn't advise this.
This is just a quick fix that sometimes works, its better to strip and clean of course.
1st thing to do is take out pad retaining pins and clean them with sand paper. that one little thing can make all the difference.
Hi jimgl, that the sort of info I was hoping for, but since the designation “retaining pin” doesn’t ring a bell (while I am sure I have held in in my hands many times), ....
do you think you could find a photo, or refer to a sketch in a manual, etc. so I know what we’re talking about ?

thanks for your help. Can you or jimgl clarify why this should work ? I assume that the pads are supposed to slide on the pins, and if they are not clean (enough) the pads may get stuck in a position too close to the disks after braking. Correct ?
