Just picked up a new CB1100 Deluxe. Here are some preliminary RPM data:
65mph/ 5th gear/ 3400RPM
65mph/ 6th gear/ 3000RPM

After 200 miles, some on interstate, i confirm the 400 rpm difference between 5th and 6th.
I was turning about 3300 at 70 mph.
I find the gearbox very well suited for city use.

One thing Chris hasn't answered is whether he's ridden the CB1100 or indeed ANY of the bikes in question which he claims to have encyclopaedic knowledge of. I'd wager he hasn't and is just an 'Internet specialist' in things mechanical...

I share Chris's love of squid (calamari) but not of these bikes. I looked at each, so they're not abhorrent to me, but the CB1100 trounced them as a package. As far as the whole sixth gear issue goes, 200 rom does not, in my book warrant the term 'overdrive'. It's just a six speed box with the rations spaced to accommodate the extra. Five works just fine for me, and due to the sheep littered idyllic village I live in (Birmingham) it's perfect for what i need. Fourth is my favourite gear on this bike, so I'll keep mine until they release a four speed version!
If cruising at optimum low revs and efficiency were an issue, I'd have bought something else, perhaps a NX750?
When Chris has answered my question, as to which of these bikes he's ridden and for how long, then we can move this debate forward.
From all the latest trolling behaviour I suspect he's off in the W800 forum telling them how inferior their bikes are to the mighty CB or Triumph!

Well, I have ridden the Bonneville and I own the CB. While I liked the Bonneville, I thought that it had a very clunky throttle response. A google search confirmed that this is common. The CB is much easier to roll on from a stop and slow speed maneuvers are easier. As far as aesthetics, I really don't like the large area between the rear of the Triumph engine and the balance of the bike. It seems like the cylinders should have been canted forward to better match the contour of the frame. These two things were enough of a turnoff to push me towards the CB. In the end, the CB seems like a more refined bike and I liked it enough to pay the difference in price.
Just to be completely clear, this is my OPINION and in no way intended to fan any flames. I liked both but I preferred one.
