A note/update on morning eats at the rally

Hi y'all. I just got off the phone with Carolina, the owner of Los Amigos Restaurant, just opened inside the Round Barn Lodge. This is their third restaurant in the area and yes, it is a Mexican restaurant. Since there are few in the group that cannot or will not eat Mexican food, this will probably not be a spot we use for a group dinner and they open at 10:00am which is too late for breakfast. However, I can arrange to have a selection of "grab and go" items available for us for some pre-ride sustenance. Carolina is very interested in helping us with something like that. She even offered to open early for regular breakfast meals, but I don't think that is necessary nor particularly affordable. Those that want a full breakfast will be able to venture a little south on US14 to Anita's Cafe which opens at 7:00am.

Some of you have indicated that you could bring your own breakfast snacks, and that is wonderful, but I'd like to at least have Carolina put together some options that might make that unnecessary. To that end, here's a survey with some common breakfast items that could be available. Pick the ones that you would actually eat/drink and we'll see where this leads us. If I missed an item that's would be important to you, please comment on that.

Location: Black Canyon Motel, Montrose, CO
Dates: June 18-22 with official rides Wednesday through Friday, check-in Tuesday night, check-out Saturday morning

From this central location we can hit 3 of the top 4 routes in Colorado

Route 1: San Juan Mountain Skyway

Route 2: Grand Mesa - Colorado State Route 65 and Unaweep Tabeguache Scenic Road - CO 141

Route 3: Black Canyon Run, Montrose to Gunnison, Highway 50, and Gunnison to Crested Butte
Sorry I'm going to miss this one. Dates conflict with my annual fly/camping trip with my airplane buddies.

Too bad as Montrose is actually a pretty short ride from here (compared to previous years).

The back roads on the western slope are some of the best, particularly that run from Durango to Ouray on 550 (watch out for the deer. That's where they got me!).

The weather should be excellent in mid June (and too early for forest fires). I feel bad that I'm not going to be there. Sad
Yikes, you'll only be five hours from me (great routes by the way) but I'll be attending my niece's wedding in Vail that weekend. Otherwise, heck yes, I'd be there!

May I suggest an alternative to Route #3. Except for the stretch between Crawford and Blue Mesa Reservour, which is not to be missed, Route #3 really isn't that great. Instead, consider a loop to include the Silver Thread Scenic Byway (CO 149) -- Montrose to Blue Mesa Reservoir to Lake City to South Fork to Pagosa Springs to Durango to Montrose. A nice long day in the saddle and absolutely stunning, especially as you follow the headwaters of the Rio Grande from 10,889' Spring Creek Pass down to Creede and South Fork. There's only one opportunity for gas between Montrose and Lake City (in Cimarron), so plan accordingly,
I think I can rally again this year, but I have to wait a bit before I can say YES. The timing and location are almost perfect, if I can convince Lesli to come then it's for sure a Yes.
Kenny, that's a great route. For those unfamiliar with the area, the route crosses the Continental Divide in two locations and climbs mountain passes totalling 73,600 vertical feet (Slumgullion Pass 11,530', Spring Creek Pass 10,889', Wolf Creek Pass 10,857', Yellow Jacket Pass 7,785', Molas Divide 10,910', Coal Bank Pass 10,640' and Red Mountain Pass 11,018'.
If you have someone that wants to split a room with you, that can be done. You just have to ask for a volunteer.
Well, a room with 2 queen beds in the Black Canyon Motel would be around USD 420 for 4 nights (Tuesday June 18 until Sat June 22), as I just looked up at their homepage http://blackcanyonmotel.com/
Why do I envision the Canadian Contingent of our membership arriving like this at the West Coast Rally in Montrose Colorado? It probably is a pretty accurate representation of us Americans, considering most will arrive first.
This time of year, it can be chilly in the morning and on top of the mountain pass and hot during the day. I would pack gear that covers 40-90*F plus rain gear. The key is layers.

Last time I rode through Colorado mountains in June, I was caught in a storm but couldn't find my waterproof liner for my riding pants. Once I was soaked, I was miserable. Once I got out of the mountain pass, the sun was out and I was able to dry out and warm up.
Hi Kenny:

I've not yet decided if I have enough time to ride out to Colorado rather than drive with the bike in tow, (I'm pretty sure I can go much further in a day driving). Can you tell me whether we'll be taking "Route 3" on the 19th? If so, I can keep west from Hotchkiss and should be able to make Green River before dark, which gets me close enough to make it home by Sunday night.

Thanks,
If anyone is planning on meeting Django and I for lunch in Moab on Tue., we'll be at the Moab Diner at noon. Departing for Montrose immediately after.

We're taking LR's route to Montrose, so it looks like we should get there around 6:00 PM.

See you there!

Kenny told me we're meeting at 7:00 AM at the coffee shop.
Arrived a little late and a little damp tonight with Django and bikesnboats, but still in time for dinner with Kenny and Haystack. Fun was had by all. Can't wait to hit the road again tomorrow.
LOL... I've been watching Django's trip with great interest. It seems to me that his riding days start much later than mine would, especially given the midday temperatures of the areas through which he's ridden. It's possible, though, that I'm not reading his Spotwalla data correctly.
Have a cup of coffee, Flynrider and remember that some of us are in a 9x9 cubical right now.
I love Gunnison and the Black Canyon. If you're hiking around there and find a hat from the Gorge Fly Shop in Hood River, OR it's mine. It blew off my head and into the canyon in 2004. Loved that hat.
Awesome. It looks like you're riding the loop in a clockwise direction. If so, instead of taking US50 to Delta / CO92, consider taking I-70 eastbound and exiting at CO 65. Follow CO 65 over Grand Mesa. It meets up with CO92 and you can then resume your route east to Hotchkiss / Crawford / Black Canyon / US 50 westbound.
I enjoyed meeting you guys in Montrose! Thanks for letting me crash the party (not literally).

Departed Montrose at 8:30 this morning and pulled into the driveway at 3:00 this afternoon. My return route was 327 miles (US 50 east over Cerro Summit and Blue Mesa Summit, then over the dam and north on CO 92 along the Black Canyon to Paonia, then up and over McClure Pass (CO 133) to Carbondale for gas and lunch (not "lunch and gas"). Then, up Glenwood Canyon to Vail, where the heavens opened and had no mercy. Cold, heavy rain all the way over Vail Pass until the other side of the tunnel, about 35 miles. Fortunately, it wasn't raining in the tunnel, and no traffic. I was still chilled when I got home but that was a great 24 hour, 600-mile round trip!
Route 2: Grand Mesa - Colorado State Route 65 and Unaweep Tabeguache Scenic Road - CO 141

There's only one opportunity for gas between Montrose and Lake City (in Cimarron), so plan accordingly,
Kenny, that's a great route.
There's only one opportunity for gas between Montrose and Lake City (in Cimarron), so plan accordingly,
LongRanger, the offical rally rides will be Wed-Fri if you can break away for a day or two you are welcome to join for part of the time.

Thanks,

Note to Django: It was an honor to ride with you as your riding skills are exemplary and also a pleasure to speak with you as your command of the English language is superb! Perhaps we'll meet again in the future.
Arrived back home in Nebraska after a 650-mile day. 93,920 miles on the CB now.
I did get a shot of Haystack's bike near the end of a long day's ride. Was he rebelling against authority, or just too tired to notice the sign? Big Grin
I departed Montrose about 9:30 this morning, heading south on US550 towards Ridgway. I got to enjoy this view for many miles.
Then I headed south for Cortez on CO145, crossing the mountains at Lizard Head Pass (10,222 ft.). It was plenty chilly at that altitude, but well worth bundling up for the awesome ride.

As of this moment, it appears that my wife Cheryl and I will be hosting the 2026 rally in the Driftless Area of Wisconsin. The official rally dates are scheduled for Sunday, August 29 - Saturday, September 5, 2026. The precise base camp location has not yet been determined, but you can use Spring Green, Wisconsin as your destination for early planning.

This article has little (actually nothing) to do with motorcycling, but it was in Saturday's Wall Street Journal and has some nice things to say about the area in which the rally will be held. In it, they mention Taliesin, Frank Lloyd Wright's famed home and studio, which is within 10 minutes of our likely base camp. I hope it's readable.

Salutations CB1100 forum users and rally goers!

After many months of waiting for damage to be repaired and temperatures to rise up again, I have finally been able to visit the site of our 2025 Rally and gather some much needed information. For those of you that are new to this concept, new to the forum, or just haven't seen this thread before, here's the particulars:

The official time: Sunday August 24th through Saturday August 30th in the year 2025, for five straight days of riding and fellowship between the 25th and the 29th.

The official place: The Comfort Suites, 3005 Bays Meadow Pl, Kingsport, TN 37660 at a rate of $120 per night before taxes.

This is an event we hold in a different town, for different rides, every single year, going back to 2015! We've terrorized such venues as North Carolina, Southeast Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Virginia. So far Tennessee has been spared, but her time is up this year! That makes this the 11th annual event and I'm doing my best to make this into a unique experience. I want people to get to ride roads they've never been on before, discover awesome lunch spots, take great pictures, and do something that will stand out among all the other events. Or , heck, if you've never been, I want to give you the best impression of what these events represent.

As of my visit this weekend, hotel accommodations have been solidified!

The Comfort Suites at this location was the best possible spot for use as a base of operations for our Rally. It has a decent and familiar hot breakfast every day, very comfortable and spacious rooms (more so than ever before in fact...), and arguably the best social gathering Gazebo-with-a-view we've ever had access to. You can use the address above to find it, or the link below to see it on a map.

The group rate I was able to get at this spot is $120 per night, prior to taxes and such (which is actually a little better than I expected, considering they charged me about 140 before taxes to stay there this last weekend.) To book your stay for the above dates, please contact:

What I scouted this weekend in particular was what I felt was one of the most important rides planned for this gathering. It travels North of Kingsport by Interesting means, taking in twisty back roads, rural sights and sounds, and stopping and quaint resting spots, until we make our way all the way across this narrow part of Virginia to the Kentucky Border. Once there we will Take on the extremely fun US-119 which is a wide, sweeping mountain road littered with stunning overlooks that will lead us to a fine lunch at the Pine Mountain Grill. After that we'll turn back for a double dose of US-119 and make our way to the town of Benham, KY. As soon as we leave Benham we'll be on a famous joyride road route 160, otherwise known as the Dragon Slayer. It's a heck of a good time winding all the way up to the top of Black Mountain at over 4100 feet, then weaving back downhill in a series of well engineered switchbacks until we reach the town of Big Stone Gap, VA. All told this route promises to be about 175 Miles and will be a full and exciting day. I've touched every inch of this route with my tires and There was NO traffic, NO construction, and decent-to-excellent pavement all around. It's gonna be a good time. See the map below to review for yourself if you like.

I've also collected a few cool pictures from the trip to act as a teaser, so enjoy, and start booking!

Without trying to be overly dramatic, I see this event as something big. We all know the forum itself is sputtering and malfunctioning. We all know new model CB1100s left North American Shores all the way back in 2017. We all know everybody here is here for good people, not to get oil advice. So, to me, this event marks a transition. It's still happening! 11 years out and we're still hanging out and riding rides. Bring your CB1100, Bring your NC750, bring your Guzzi, bring your Ford Mustang, I don't care. CB1100 forum rallies don't represent the bike. The bike represents US. So come hang out. If you're new to these events, this is your chance. If you're old to these events, or just plain old, attendance is mandatory. Don't let anything stop you.
