4-1 vs 4-2 sound on the CB1100
#1

I'm interested to hear feedback on this. My bike (second hand) came with 4-4 system but I prefer the look and sound of a 4-2 or 4-1.

Webike has some nice (and cheap) CSR, K-Factory, Morwaki, Yoshimura etc ranging from cheap steel to Ti.

My experience with 4-cylinder bikes is that a 4-2 setup always sounds badazz (growl) whereas the 4-1 is less tuneful (still nice though).

Appreciate any seat-of-the-pants sound advice and general comments.

Cheers!

I think it all depends on the pipe (s) and whether they have the baffles in them or not. I prefer quiet pipes personally and in order of sound preference would be 4 pipes, 2 pipes, 1 pipe all with baffles.

Hey there R748 and welcome to the forum.

I've had a cheap 4:1 (KSY) from webike which had great sound once I opened up the baffle. The stock baffle was way too restrictive and I think was choking up the motor at higher RPMs. I have since put a 4:2 system that now has a really wicked note when the throttle is opened ... so I'd say go with a 4:2. All but the mufflers was built by pipe masters in QLD which I then mated to a pair of reverse cone megaphones. It's ceramic coated black to suit my taste, and budget, but is also available in polished stainless steel. Here's a link to some photos:

PM me if you're considering going this way and I'll give you all the details.

Good luck with your project.

Thanks guys. I appreciate your support for my somewhat unproven theory. Agreed on not being too loud (mostly). Thumbs Up

Aussieflyer - you are on the money with that setup. Thanks.

Peter at Pipemasters did a wonderful job on my old V7 Guzzi (I have to this day never heard a better sound from a motorcycle - maybe equal to a 916 at least). Great experience getting the pipes fitted over a beer at his place. Top quality and top service.

Anyway, I digress. PM on the way. I may go polished though as mine is a lighter colour.

Incidentally the setup I have on the CB1100 is also 4-4 Pipemasters. Just for me personally I would like the 4-2 (being a bit picky). Apart from personal preference on the looks, I'm totally stoked with it. Sounds awesome.
