3D Printed Parts
#1

I recently used our 3D Printer at work to print out a couple of Spacer Blocks I modeled in SolidWorks to raise the height of my Handlebars to my desired height.

Worked great and blends in wit the triple tree well. I used the factory Damper Pads to maintain vibration absorption. The Pads did line up perfectly, until I tightened down the studs which caused the soft material to shrink/expand in some areas which shifted alignment. No biggie, not very noticeable and function is not effected.

Anybody else use 3D Printing technology to make parts for their bikes? Curious as to what other applications there are out there.

Enjoy!

Nice. Not for motorcycles, but guys on the Fiesta ST forum are printing their own heavy duty gears to overcome a weak factory blend door motor for the HVAC sytsem. When I tested sensors for a data recording company, we'd print sensor mounts to fit whatever the application was, like roll bars, suspension components, etc. Very handy.

i've been wanting to take up 3D printing at home, particularly for things like GoPro mounts, but I've been getting by with JB Weld and sandpaper.

3D printing is pretty awesome for "custom anything". Just need to invest the time to learn the choice of layout and rendering tools and whether or not to print locally, or farm it out online.

Its amazing how affordable the technology has become. I know many people who have home 3D Printers, mainly nerds like myself, that do all kinds of cool things with them.

One of the Designers I work with is building a cafe project out of an old Honda CL450. He has 3D Printed stuff all over it. He sands them down smooth, then paints them and they look like aluminum pieces when finished. Very cool stuff.

I would be all over that! I've looked all over the web for 3D models of CB1100, no joy so far. I did find a really nice model of a Buell XB1200, so there are some guys starting to model some bike stuff out there.

I thought about modeling up my factory Clutch & Break levers, then altering the lever ends to my liking. Use some of my factory pieces, like the Cam and Bushings with it. I want a shorter set of levers, suitable for just two finger operation. No reason I can't use two fingers on my current Levers, just thought it would be cool to make my own custom Levers. Still may do that at some point.

If strength is a factor, one does have to be conscious of both the design and its printing orientation. I can perform FEA within SolidWorks, but not on 3D Printed stuff...yet anyway.

That is another economical option, upload your part file over the Internet, receive an immediate quote, input your Credit Card and viola, a couple of days late you have a part showing up in the mail.

The 3D-printed specimen you presented Mark is a decent stab. (pretty dang)

A little bit of paint and walla! ... a Christmas tree ornament.

At SEMA a few years ago, they had a huge 3D printer set up in the lobby. All throughout the show, it was printing a full-size car (albeit a very simple buggy type), and on the last day of the show an electric motor was fitted, and it was driven out.

I believe it.

The concept is promising.

These people is 3D printing complete rockets!

It's a new world. Just imagine on a bike, the complexity of designing a water cooled engine head, with internal passages, etc. When 3D printing is cost effective, all the moulding complexity won't be needed. And when it's precise enough, most machining won't be needed either!

Huge savings in tooling, material waste, manpower... and much more design freedom.
