I think everyone knew it would be only a matter of time before Yamaha used their new three cylinder for an adventure-touring model. Hopefully it won't be as ugly as this rendering.

This could be a real contender in the class if Yamaha can clear up their fuel injection glitches and keep the weight below the competition.
That screen is really hideous.

A lot of people are wanting this bike, or at least saying they want it. Yea, that windshield is pretty weird.

"Adventure bikes". The motorcycle fad de jour. There's few things as amusing as a guy on a GS in full desert regalia riding aaround Daytona standing on the pegs. Ok, the Pirates are slightly more amusing...

So true, but they (ADV bikes) do make really fine touring bikes. Suzuki has equipped its' newest V-strom with tires that make no pretense to off road use. I rented a R1200GS for a day few years ago. I wouldn't have dared ride that heavy bike off road. That is for those with riding skills far better than mine.

First that wind screen is just plain ugly! I view the adventure bike market the same as the suburbanite LandCruizer craze 20 yrs ago. Most never get off road or are used as per concept. I have lived and work all over the developing world, and there is no way I would ride these oversized pigs in most developing countries! Plus just too big and heavy for me and my abilities. Speed is not needed, you need ride agility, gas mileage, and mechanical reliability. Parts availability would be a big plus. You are going to sit for a couple of weeks waiting for parts in Africa or Peru, for any of these KTM, BMW or other fancy ADV bikes. Pack light, and ride a small, POS bike that is available in the developing world.

It looks like a take on the Triumph Tiger 800, which I own, and is the best all- around bike I've owned. Funky styling, but it does everything well, is comfortable and has a great, great motor. Yam will do well with it.

No doubt; I rode my 07 DL1000 for over 60k miles and never considered taking it off pavement. But, OTOH, I also didn't look like I was 2 stages into the Dakar when I rode it.
Meh, whatever is fun. Better than strangling kittens.

The bike shown in the pic is -- as the title to this thread says -- a Sport Touring bike, not an ADV bike. My understanding is that Yamaha is going to build a smaller ADV bike based on their FZ-07 twin, not the 09, which might be released as early as October. Yamaha themselves have stated they plan to release 12 new models in the next year; hope there are a few interesting bikes in the mix...

Looks like their response to the NC700X, which I find a fantastic commuter bike and perfect for the northwest. While not a true ADV bike, they fit right in with our roads and side road rides that are available here.
We have a lot of ADV bikes here in the PNW, they have plenty of places to go.
