35 Year-Old 2014 Honda CB1100 ...

The other day I exited the Hamilton-bound freeway to avoid a rush "hour" traffic backup and was stopped at a red light. A gorgeous 1983 Honda V65 Magna pulled up next to me. The ride was in excellent condition - not showroom, but well taken care and pretty well in stock-looking condition. I complimented the owner and he proudly acknowledged. He commented on my ride as he stared at the left side of my 2014 CB1100 and said it was in great condition, "... that has got to be, what?, 'bout 35 years-old?". I realized at that moment Honda did a great job. I can't think of a better compliment than that.

Ha that's awesome. I had an old schooler checkin out my bike in a parking lot not too long ago and he had many old Hondas and others and he was pretty surprised when I told him it was a 2014. Had another younger guy come up to me at a gas station while I was fillin her up with some sweet non oxy and he was part of a vintage bike club. Said he was looking into getting a new cb11 for the reliability that he doesn't have in his old machines, for long distance rides..

I believe any bike that has some real bones and no faux parts (e.g. making a liquid cooled engine appear as air cooled engine) can be a classic in any rider's heart. Honda certainly tried to do that without copying everything they used to do well so many decades ago. Of course, bikes like Triumph Bonneville has been doing it all the time and they have soul.

Anyone have ideas of a modern bike that has soul? It might be interesting to hear.

Example: The Moto Guzzi Griso has soul, ?

Yeah, the engine is what fools them. People stare at mine every time I ride it. As soon as I sell my other bikes, the customizing will begin but I just love this thing.

I think a modern bike can definitely have "soul". The VFR comes to mind. That bike sort of spoke to me but it was a dangerous conversation.

ARE fins on an engine with water-jackets, fake?

It could well be that it's both air- and water-cooled.

My take on it is, I salute the engineers who use all available resources, cooling and otherwise. Water-cooling provides quiet operation and more-stable temperatures. But just as how air-cooled engines get a boost with oil-coolers and oil-galleys through the heads...so, too, might water-cooled engines get a hand-up with some cooling fins in critical places. Smaller radiators and less stress.
