The sad thing is that many kids, (and not-so-young kids) NEVER rode a pedal bicycle, going straight to battery powered sidewalk cars to electric skateboards, scooters, and bicycles.
The good thing is, they'll have plenty of experience for when they're old and riding electric wheelchairs.

is it really $135,718 US dollars? Holy smokes. What kids can afford those?

It is a crowd fund raising campaign. I think the base model starts at $2500 U.S. + $200 shipping and goes up from there depending on model and capacity. These product proposals are designed to complete with Zero.

Example:

The Segway X260 model proposes:

* 74.6 mile range on battery
* 183.4 ft-lb maximum torque (<-- more than double the torque of the Zero FX = $8995 U.S.)
* 45 degree maximum hill incline
* 10.6" ground clearance
* 121.3 lbs weight
* Top speed of 46.6 mph
* $3999 U.S.
