Airbag saves a life
#1
Hi all...just saw an unbelievable video at motorbikewriter.com where an airbag saves a rider's life. Must see.

I just saw that video , this is the reason that I wear a Helite Turtleback Airvest.

Me too. It inflated when a riding buddy pulled up alongside me on the shoulder of the highway and fell into me, knocking me off my bike. I was ATGATT and was fine after hitting the deck (and having my bike fall on top of me), so I'm not sure I needed it then, but it's nice to know it worked.

Are the inflatables a "one-time-use" thing and then the mj jacket's life is over? Not suggesting they wouldn't be worth it if they are one and done, but curious.

No, they can be used again.

The Dainese ($$$Wink needs to be sent back to the distributor to be rearmed. It's a very nice system and relies on a CPU and inertia sensors for deployment. This is what's used on the racing circuit.

The Helite is much simpler. It's connected to your bike via quick-release tether and uses a single-use replaceable CO2 cartridge which is easily swapped out after deployment. The cartridges for my vest cost $25.

Other inexpensive brands are beginning to appear on the market. I'm not sure how they work, but they're probably similar to the Helite.

The build in back protector on the vest is very nice, you can take all your back protectors out of your jackets and this will than give you more room for "layering "

I know it's an older post, but anyway. A friend of mine reported some valuable insight, which I'd like to share. He bought a "relatively" simple® automatic airbag for his neck, it's used on a bicycle (where size and shape matter more). Anyway, the technology is the same as in airbag vests for motorcycles (MAV). We hadn't been in touch for a while, but when we met again I asked him about his neck-vest Wink
And believe it or not, he reported the airbag had already "exploded" 4 times since purchase (about 2 years ago) - without any reason. Every time the company replaced the device free of charge (reading out sensors allows them to tell there had been no fall, and no reason for the thank to go off). Then again, imagine your MAV goes off without reason in dense traffic or heavy rain. If such happens with other brands too, the manufacturer may not mention it in their ads, my guess. And online "reporters" and reviewers, or test magazines will probably never find out in their afternoon long testing.
Seem there is still quite a bit to be learned about the technology ... not in a lab, out on the street.

I know this comment is going to be controversial, but attributing his life to the airbag is not conclusive. While I'm glad the rider survived, and his safety equipment likely protected him, his hard braking causing him to be thrown over the car on impact may have done the most good.

Every accident is different, the number of factors involved incalculable by normal scientific means, because all the factors aren't known - speed, angle of impact, rider response, etc. Head-on accidents have been survivable without the airbag, some with less injury, some with more. Wearing one could make you safer, but the point here is that the article implies it definitely saved his life.

All I'm saying is, we don't absolutely know the positive contribution of the airbag. It's like deer whistles on a car or bike.

Relative simple could be a cheap piece of equipment from a lesser quality concerned company ?
