Grinding into second gear
#1
Alight, I did a search and couldn’t find anything. So maybe someone can help, as this must be a rare issue.

2014 CB1100, only 5,000 miles. Shifting into second gear it will grind. I mean grind. Not clunk into gear but will grind into gear.
Not grinding when downshifting. Or upshifting past second. Also, at lower RPM this is not so common. But at high rpm, it WILL grind.

I discovered if I preload the shifter, it will not grin at all. .
Any advise? I will bleed the replace the fluid, but is there anything else I can check? Like clutch adjustment or engagement? I’ve already put the clutch lever to setting 5.

Some more info that may be helpful, original owner dropped at under 5mph at around 2k miles, and the left side cover was replaced for cosmetic reasons. insurance replaced the cover at a Honda dealer.
Issue was not an issue until around 3k miles. Maybe something is out of adjustment since the repair?

Thanks all!

I noticed youve been a member for over a year, so assume you've had your bike awhile. Has it always done this or is this a new development?

Btw the clutch adjustment wherl 1-5 just changes how far the blade is from the grip, it has nothing to do with engagement.

A grinding noise may indicate that the clutch is not fully disengaging when the lever is pulled all the way to the handlebar. Does the lever action "feel" any different than it did when the noise was not present? Change the clutch fluid, and properly bleed the system. If this doesn't correct the problem, then I suspect one of the two clutch cylinders (master or slave) needs to be rebuilt.

These bikes (at least mine, and some other members have reported) can be finicky shifters. Check for proper chain adjustment. When is the last time you checked your chain adjustment? Is it well lubricated? You may think this has nothing to do with the noise you hear, but through my experience I have discovered they do affect the way your bike shifts.

This might sound like a dumb question, but when was the last time you checked or changed your engine oil?

Well, It was the clutch fluid. Replaced and bleed with dot4 and it’s shifts fine. Thanks a lot as always!!
