TO ALL CB1100 OWNERS!!!

There is a simple test to prove or disprove Honda USA's theory/assessment that on Standard CB1100 (with the 4 into 1 exhaust system), a rattling sound coming from the lower part of "the engine" (the exhaust) during warm up is common to most CB1100, and is "normal". Since we all have the same bike, and have one of the largest outreach to CB1100 owners in the US with this forum, we could all let are bikes warm up for 5 minutes (though the rattling seems to creep in within 4 minutes) from cold start (but let's push to 6 to make sure), and report on what we hear. Let's hear what people with complete after market exhaust systems have to say. Let's also hear from DLX people as well, since their exhaust is a 4 into 2 system, and therefore different from the 4 into 1. Logically, DLX people, and complete after market system people shouldn't have that sound. So CB1100 owners, start your engines!

In 40 years, I've never let a motorcycle warm up for 5 minutes while on it's side stand, no matter the ambient temperature. I'd imagine this 'test' might create a noise, or noises, on virtually any bike allowed to do so. I'm oddly interested in the reports, but not in performing the test.

It should be there within 4 minutes. I do often let it warm up that long, not because I want to, but simply because after starting it, I'll start monkeying in the garage, and getting carried away/distracted with stuff, like rearranging its nest. I then realize that I'm not actually quite ready to go, and I end up just turning it off. I think we might have all done that once or twice.

I also don't let it warm up for that long,But to each his own..
I have a aftermarket full exhaust system that is loud so I really don't hear any rattles just the boom of my motogpwerks exhaust. I did however one day let it idle to see what everyone was talking about and burned my ear in doing so. My exhaust was so loud that I could barely hear the rattle till my ear met with the engine cover.
Thanks all.

I generally allow a warm-up - any piece of metal needs to warm slowly to avoid thermal stress.

Typically it's been about five minutes while I fumble with my gear and eyewear.

I have not ever heard this rattling.

I don't hear any rattling either.
I live in a residential area with low speed limits and lots of stop signs so I don't bother to warm up the engine more than the time it takes to pull on my helmet and gloves.
By the time I get to where the speed limit is above 30 mph the engine has had lots of time to warm up.

Stock CB should sound like this::

I made this video for DBuster when my bike was stock. Lower end should be free of any noise. I have over 8000mi on my bike and have not heard lower end noise since my 600 mi oil change.

Alright, that's funny. Listening with my headphones, I can hear a bit of clacking from your motor in the video when the camera is at certain angles to the engine.

Mechanical noises are normal, its that rattle which is not evident in the video, and is cause for concern. If a motor has it you can hear it from 20ft away, there is no need to close to the motor.

Anyone here read/remember Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance?

A good read, and a complex story - told on three levels. The top level, of course, was the author's satisfaction in his ability to maintain his motorcycle through a grueling cross-country trip. During one of his inner conversations, a segue from one backstory to another, he was discussing the mechanical noise eminating from his Honda twin. Keep in mind, this was a bike he bought used and with a hidden problem that Pirsig only found after two seize-ups from overheating.

He spoke of how the engine had a "nickel-and-dime sound - as if there was a lot of loose change flying around in the crankcase. Sounds terrible, but it's just normal mechanical noise." He then related of how he test-rode a friend's CB...same year and model. Completely different sound..."No worse, but different. Hard to believe they both came from the same factory, even the same year."

So it is. Any complex piece of machinery will develop its own "personality." Although all our machines start out equal, they will wear different and develop their singular strengths and weaknesses.

Yours is apparently that hidden rattle. It will either get worse and you'll find it; or it won't, and it'll just be part of your riding experience.
