On today's ride I passed a guy on a full dress Harley (pretty orange flake paint btw). He was wearing sunglasses, black gym shorts and black flip flops. That's it!

I felt so overdressed in my modular helmet, vented jacket, jeans and boots. (felt hot too lol)

We don't see that very often around here because of our cooler climate, but it does happen and it gives me chills down my back to think what will happen if the rider or passenger should hit that unforgiving pavement.
More often we see young girls as a passenger on the back of a crotch rocket dressed in so little as to be barely legal.
I can only shake my head in dismay and wish a silent wish that she gets home safely. If not, she will carry those terrible scars for the rest of her life - provided she survives.
I hate to even think about the possible consequences.
But I suppose I was invincible at that age too

The worst I saw was a gal riding a Boss Hoss in a bikini and sandals. No helmet, no nothing. This was in Sturgis (where else?).

I strongly believe everybody should be free to dress in as much or as little as he desires - young girls especially. However, and regardless of the gender difference (or lack thereof) between the motorcycle operator and passenger, I have nothing but disdain for a motorcycle operator that is better protected than their passenger. It is not unlike boarding an airline flight, and be greeted by the captain wearing a parachute.

oh yea, I defend the guys right to dress like that. It just always amazes me when someone does. I mean this guy didn't even have a tshirt on, just shorts and flip flops. Road grit alone and bugs would force me to wear more.

Like I have said in the past when I was growing up you could ALWAYS count on Harley riders wearing a tshirt (and usually a leather vest over that), jeans and boots. There is a new age of HD riders.

Around here I see a lot of what I call "suburban sports fan Harley dads." 40-something white guys with cargo shorts, athletic shoes with the dainty low-cut socks, Oakleys, sports team T-shirt, baseball hat. Always wonder how the baseball hat doesn't fly off. This species only appears when the riding weather outside is ideal.

At this point the least I'll wear on the street is textile pants, jacket, and leather gloves. Always have boots on as well. If I get much more protective I'll have to move into my AStars one piece leather set up from the track...lol

You know I suppose this points to the marketing success of Harley, in that the bikes appeal to a much larger group than just the outlaw types (originally) thru the doctor lawyers ( who at least wore jeans, tshirts, boots and the occassional helmet, to a much larger audience of guys who really don't buy into any particular image and are just comfortable riding around in whatever.

A guy in his 40s with a family finds it tough to stay in touch with the cool young independent dude he used to be. A Harley in the garage, even if ridden less than 1000 miles a year, helps maintain the lifeline to sanity in the midst of ballet rehearsals, D- report cards, and the Jones's just put in a new hot tub.
