Big rigs banned from Tail of the Dragon:

Basically any vehicle over 30 feet is banned as of next month.
I have never been, but it gets mentioned a lot. I'm just interested in this because up where I live they try to keep trucks off back roads as well. What do you think of this?

Never been there, but based on what I saw on a TV show about the dragon, its a real good idea and something they should have done some time ago.

I'd say it's about time some teeth was put into it rather than just posting warning signs.
There is no way any big truck should be attempting to travel those short, heavily banked curves.
Many of the curves are some what blind without guard rails (not that they would help a motorcycle),
so when rounding a curve if there is an unexpected obstacle in your lane you don't have any good escape options,
either take the uphill mountain side or the down hill "cliff" side, both bad choices even if you could alter your committed
angle of banking and path mid curve.

From what I understand, once the trucker sees the sign it can be too late to turn around. They need a good exit strategy.

Btdt.... Seen it, and it's scary..
The problem is that 129 on a map can appear to save a fair bit of miles, vs having to go around...
If it happened on a weekend, someone would probably die....
If you have to go to the gap, do during the week... It's now way to crowded otherwise..... Oh yeah, whatever you do, stay the heck away from it during the huge miati rally weekend...

Be really, really careful in May 2015. Hear tell there's a gaggle of CB1100s planning to be there.

Gaggle? That's geese, right?
Let's see...what would a group of CB1100 riders be called?
Murder? Nope, that's crows.
Army? Ants.
Grist? Bees (but not C-Bees)
Leap? That's leopards and, in any case, we don't want the word "leap" in anyway associated with Tail of the Dragon.
hmmm...
We're a wise lot. How about 'Parliament' like owls? Not bad, but too political.
We ride modern-day horses, but 'Team' sounds too organized and 'Herd' sounds like we're all fat cows (only some of us are).
Many of us will be returning to Deal's Gap like swallows to Capistrano, so 'Gulp'? Ummm...no
We chatter like magpies. 'Charm'. Now that is getting closer, right?
Wait, wait...I think I came up with one...
A Retrospective of CB1100s?

By the way, I wonder where the parliament of owls came from. I've always rather suspected it was originally chooks based on the title of Chaucer's poem A Parliament of Fowls which, based on a growing body of historical evidence, seems so much more appropriate.
