Red light dilemma

Interesting, debatable, even arguable, but I like it myself. I predict some will take advantage of this and put themselves and other motorist in harm’s way. During the day, timers are still utilized locally. One does not have to wait that long before a light will change, unless …. you are turning right and waiting for an arrow. It’s just after 11PM that I have troubles with the lights. During the day is when I foresee troubles.

Utilized this law while riding in NC and MN. I have only needed it when riding late at night. During the day there are always enough other vehicles on the road or like you said, the timers are functioning. It has never lead to a close call for me or any dangerous situations. Like any law, it can be abused by the ignorant and lead to problems.

In wa state it is "wait a full cycle". However, if you don't trigger the light, it may not cycle at all in some locations.

I have gone through red lights that don't have much traffic up here in Wi.. The law works well I think.

I've gone through lights here in Vancouver. Most are on timers, but there are a couple that will never cycle unless you trip the coil. It's always way late at night with noone else on the road near me and after a full stop and wait. Never had a problem.

One thing that actually does work well here is that they seem to put push-to-cross buttons in for cyclists at most intersections, which are basically in-line with the curb so you can just push them from the street without getting off the bike. Seems to mitigate the red-light problem in most cases.

They left Illinois off the list, but our law seems very similar to Indiana's. I have not heard of any crashes in which this law was a factor, but it's not like I'm reading the Illinois Major Crash Report on a daily basis.

If you run across one of these lights that aren't tripped by your motorcycle, report it to the traffic department of whatever entity owns it. I've found that traffic departments are usually very quick to properly adjust the detector loops if they're made aware of the problem.

Same here as we already have this law in WI. I believe you have to wait 45seconds then can go through the red if it is clear
