Average CB1100 DLX Rider Age

The recent [url=http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a12213518/ten-thousand-miles-on-the-final-aircooled-honda/]CB1100 article appearing on Road & Track's website got me to thinking about this.

There is already an "age" thread and poll on the go, but I'll jump in.
The article made me smile. It was good reading - and yes, I'm older, wealthier and more conservative too - and loving every minute of it ROFL
I'm also within spitting distance of age 80 with no plans to slow down or give up any of my small fleet. I was out on the CB today for a rip along one of our winding coastal roads - and plan to do it again tomorrow.
September is a great time of year here as most of the tourists have left and the roads are nearly empty.
Here, motorcyclists are welcomed with open arms by the tourist industry and you never hear of anyone being turned away or treated badly. Thankfully, that stigma has vanished.
This is a bike destination in the summer and when shiny Goldwings and Harleys show up that means $$$.
Our annual Labor Day Wharf Rat Rally in the tiny town of Digby draws 25-30 thousand bikers and there is never any rowdiness or such bad behaviour.
That many bikes also means $$$ and the town loves it!

Yes, probably too many polls. My curiosity stems from the article — has me wondering if the DLX tends to have more appeal to riders who are older than those who prefer the standard (and vice versa).

I'm a pup compared to Rocky, but at 67 still managed to land in your oldest age group in the poll. Older? yes. More conservative? yes. I don't consider myself wealthy by any stretch, but I don't owe anyone anything, there's a roof over my head and there's food on the table every day, so I don't consider myself poor either. Being of German heritage from depression era parents we learned to be pretty frugal growing up. Never outgrew it. Motorcycles are my luxury item. Still, I won't spend willy nilly on mc stuff either. Buy my riding gear on sale ... or gently used. A $300 purchase is a big decision for me, not because I don't have the $300, but do I really NEED the item in question, and is it worth more to me than the $300 sitting in the nest egg?

Buying the DLX was an easy decision for me, even though I had already splurged on a 13 CB1100. I mean look at one. They are drop dead gorgeous. I HAD no choice but to buy one lol .

This is what drives my curiosity in relationship to the article. It's well known that the DLX turns your crank while I find the 13 Standard to be the best looking CB1100. I had not previously given much thought to our age difference as a factor in what we each find appealing.

I like most all of the vintage CBs (not a real fan of the Customs however). But if I had to rank them for beauty the original CB750 would fall below the CB400F and even the later CB750F/CB900F/CB1100F bikes of the early 80's. I'm guessing that the CB750 would rank at the top of the list for most DLX owners (or perhaps I'm wrong?). But what I hadn't considered previous to reading the Road & Track article was if this could be a function of age and at what point in our respective timelines that those old CBs became something that we could actually ride (or contemplate riding) due to our age. The CB750 was a bit more of my dad's time while the CB750F of the early 80's was a but more of my time relatively speaking. This probably has a fair bit of impact as to what appeals to me.

None of which is to say that I don't admire the old CB750's — just ask cooldrum (he owns a beauty).

Just interesting to think about.

Ferret has ten years on me, but I think I meet the DLX demographic pretty well too. I owned a pristine 1970 CB750K0 two decades ago, and a 1976 CB400F several years before that. Pretty bikes to look at but not so enjoyable on the road (I'd been completely spoiled by more contemporary machines). I had the same rose-colored view of my lovely 1973 RD350. It's long gone too, for the same reason. Compared to that vintage CB750K0, I much prefer the look of a silver 1979 CB750F Supersport (or a CBX).

As far as the Road & Track article, I loved it. Like Mr. Egan, I too remove my black leather jacket (when I'm wearing it) before entering any establishment. I simply don't want to be associated as "one of those guys." I'm not a biker. I just like riding motorcycles.

Never had really thought of age being a factor for favoring a DLX. I'm on the downhill side of 69, conservative, not wealthy but comfortable. I'm with Guth; the original 2013 is the best looking CB. I prefer the 4 into 1 exhaust and the smaller tank. The one thing I did not like was corrected by painting the side covers. Wouldn't mind having the 6 speed from the '14.

If the DLX had been available in Canada in 2014 when I bought my CB, I would have chosen that over the standard, but we only got one model which is Spencer blue and has most (all?) of the DLX features except dual exhaust.

Well .... 74 came and went this past January, but in April, I picked up a nice black CB1100 standard. She joined the stable of well-used (and used often) bikes ..... R100GS and Moto Guzzi 1200 Sport.

Didn't get too many miles put on initially ..... since the suspension and I weren't compatible. But everything else about the bike is sweet. Taking me a while to adapt to the DOHC in-line four after a rash of vertical twins, but I'm getting there. A set of Ikons has softened up the rear, and I'll soon be able to report on the Traxxion Dynamics fork kit. I believe it'll work for me. They selected springs to match my weight, and set the Race Tech valving to match my riding style (light touring and day rides, solo.) Looking forward to more miles this year before the snow flies, and a bunch more in 2018.

Enjoyed the article from the Road and Track website. Reminded me of riding in the early 1980s. I'd see a small motel with a 'vacancy' sign lit, look it up in a phone directory, call from a phone booth, and make my reservation. In the mid 1960s, the motel issue wasn't a problem, since I rarely had the money to afford one.

I just turned 61 and I love my DLX. I think it is just about perfect for me; low seat height, plenty of power and she is beautiful. I really have never been more pleased with my bike. Everywhere I go to, people gather around my bike and ask questions. "What year is it? It's a '14. Wow!

Interestingly, I'll be riding her in the Dallas Distinguished Gentlemans Ride.
