I love long days in the saddle, but have never done a 1000 mile day. Pretty sure even at my advanced age I could do that. My wife and I together two up, did a 942 mile day back in 1977 coming home non stop from Florida. But I always thought an Iron Butt consisting of 11 thousand mile days in a row was just absurd. 45 of those thousand mile days in a row is a word I can't even think of. Doesn't seem it would be possible without utter, dangerous exhaustion somewhere along the way. Some men are made of pure grit and determination.

I did two 700 plus miles days in a row on a klr650, and this after 4000 miles spread out over 2 plus weeks on a trip to Mexico...that was plenty. I'm sure having a decent ride that fits you perfectly would make a big difference, but doing multiple 1000 mile days? Impressive, but crazy!

One of his heroes, Ron Ayres, was inducted into the Defective Gene Pool Hall of Fame. It is, of course, entirely up to the individual what they do, but I'd have thought Matt Wise (the author of this piece) was a strong contender for a similar award.
