Soon it will be breeding /hunting season for white-tail deer in the midwest. Bucks will be chasing, does will be running, fawns will be abandoned and lost, all of them crossing the road at any time of the day or night. When you are blitzing down your favorite roads, keep an eye out for them.

Yesterday, not 300 yards past this one, a deer fawn crossed the road in front of me causing me to brake pretty hard. This was at 11;15 am. (also came around another curve 1/2 hour later, and found 4 jake turkeys crossing the road).

What the Ferret said! I missed a summer of riding thanks to deer. Wasn't able to use my left thumb, so only recently started putting the bike back together. Hope to get back in the saddle before long.

Great advice
In the past 28 years I've had several very close encounters with both whitetail deer and moose.
Each time I escaped by the skin of my teeth, but twice I thought I was a gonner for sure and couldn't believe my good luck.

Yes, I consider deer as my biggest threat. There are plenty of them in the area where I live. Unlike wild turkeys (which seem much smarter) the deer have the tendency to cross the road just when I am about to pass in a car or on my bike. I also see plenty of dead carcasses on the side of the road, as a testimony of previous encounters and I can only hope that the driver (or rider) got away without any bodily harm...
