Cool photos. What does high desert refer to ? Is it hot or cold in the high desert?

The main distinction is elevation, which brings with it differences in temperatures and wind patterns. The low desert is close to sea level and much warmer, while the high desert tends to be around 3000-4000' and a little cooler. Generally, in California, they're also referred as the Sonoran (low) and Mojave (high) deserts.

Awesome. I like riding in places where the horizon is a long way off and the sky is a major part of the scenery. Bike is looking good too!

Always liked the high desert. Spent time at TwentyNine Palms, lived in Yucca Valley. Best sunsets ever. Riding my 1983 Honda Interceptor VF750F at that time. Still have it!

Motorcycle-camped in Joshua Tree NP many, many times. There's some real beauty to be seen in that place. Lots of interrupted sleep because of howling coyotes over the next hill.

Thanks for the compliments guys. The High Desert Mojave Desert is an absolutely beautiful place to ride any motorcycle. Especially now that the temperature has dropped to 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit in the evenings. I'm located at an Army post and if you guys ever want to go on a epic ride around here please look me up. Route 66 is just around the corner as well.

Right on brotha. I could not explain it better even if I tried.

Not far from downeck's post at Fort Irwin is the little town of Baker, CA, along I-15. It's home to the world's tallest thermometer. I've seen it read 116 degrees on several occasions. Baker is on the route to Death Valley from L.A.

Last time I was in Baker, I was chatting with a guy who owns the only towing service in town. He makes a killing towing folks in their RV's who overheat on the climb up Halloran Summit just east of town on their way to Las Vegas. This stretch of I-15 climbs 3,000' in 19 miles and the grade is very deceiving, but very real. Vehicle fires are not uncommon and you can see evidence of burned-out vehicles all the way up the grade.
