Preparing to do a fork service, any advice?
#1
Well, as much as I like my local garage, their fork service price is making me retreat to my mechanical chops. I just can't justify $600 for less than $100 in parts and a couple hours of labor. These look like pretty standard forks. BUT, if anyone has done this service before and ran into anything out of the ordinary, please let me know. Otherwise, I will post my experience. Maybe I will do a tutorial, as I do not see one here. All Balls equipment is arriving soon, and Motul fork oil.

Just curious about that price, Skid...
Is that handing the fork tubes to a shop, or having them do the R&R?
$600 is ... a lot, even these days.

Amen brother!

Nah, this is full, drive the bike in, get everything done and pick it up.

I know how to do this stuff, I'd just rather not do it myself. BUT at that price (and I love this shop they're great), it's just a little too rich for my (Scottish) blood.

Makes sense to give it a stab if you have the time, patience, confidence, and secured space to plan out and execute the work yourself.

Well, superficially, just need new fork seals, but while your in there, might as well do a full service. I haven't done a thing since I purchased the 2013 in 2015, so she's over-due for some new oil, etc. I needed new rear pads, and thought I'd get a Spring check up. Shop wanted $1k. I did the rear pads this morning, in about 15 minutes. Going to do the forks this afternoon. I have done this before (on another bike) and it took less than 2 hours. As much as I like the local shop, that's just too much money for the services I need.

Maybe with shop labour continuing to spike, maybe there is some retirement part-time income for CB1100 and future retired motorcycle enthusiasts in general.

Anybody know which way the front axel is threaded? Whatever numbnuts put it back after my last tire change torqued it to about 120lbs, and I don't want to strip the bolt. ⸨◺_◿⸩
